Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Psychologist to join our team at the Center for Integrated Residential Care for Addictions (CIRCA) within the Veterans Health Administration. As a Psychologist, you will play a critical role in providing comprehensive assessments, individual and group psychotherapy, crisis intervention, case management, and discharge planning to our patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct Service Provision
    • Conduct comprehensive admission assessments, including an assessment of patient characteristics, substance use, mental health, and social history, and diagnoses.
    • Conduct risk assessments as required for residential programs and develop Safety Plans as needed to ensure the safety of our patients.
    • Develop individualized treatment plans and update as required.
    • Provide a full range of evidence-based therapeutic interventions, including group and individual psychotherapy focused on substance use and mental health co-morbidities.
    • Provide on-call coverage for the residential treatment programs.
    • Consult with referring providers about residential addiction services.
    • Attend clinical team meetings and take the lead in overseeing the care of individual patients as needed.
    • Assist with case management and discharge planning as needed.
    • Offer measurement-based care to our patients.
    • Serve as a consultant to other medical center staff to assist in the treatment of patients with substance use disorders.
    • Provide clinical supervision and training for pre-doctoral interns, post-doctoral fellows, and/or psychology practicum students on the addiction and co-occurring disorders rotation.
    • May provide clinical supervision for other disciplines, including psychiatry residents and social work interns, as appropriate.
    • Contribute to mental health clinical service activities, such as urgent care, police evaluations, and C&P exams, as requested.
  • Clinical Administrative Activities
    • Complete all clinical charting and documentation required for VA Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Programs in a timely manner.
    • Attend staff meetings to support CIRCA.
    • Stay informed regarding treatment and outcome research development in the areas of substance use, mental health, and related fields.
    • Assist with the modification/implementation of evidence-based treatments in CIRCA.
    • Review clinical documentation of trainees and ensure that it meets standards and is completed in a timely manner.
    • Provide clinical services in an ethical manner, consistent with American Psychological Association and VA Boston Healthcare System ethical guidelines.

  • Participation in the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination program is a requirement for all Veterans Health Administration Health Care Personnel (HCP).
Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

The basic requirements for employment as a VHA psychologist are prescribed by Public Law 96-151 codified in 38 U.S.C. § 7402. To qualify for appointment as a psychologist in VHA, all applicants must meet the following:

  • Citizenship. Be a citizen of the United States.
  • Education. (1) Have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS), or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) at the time the program was completed.
  • Licensure. Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Grade Determinations

In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates:

  • Staff Psychologist, GS-11 (Entry Level)
  • Staff Psychologist, GS-12 (Developmental Level)
  • Staff Psychologist, GS-13 (Full Performance Level)
Preferred Experience

Experience in domiciliary SUD residential care unit and working with individuals with substance use disorders.

Must be in overall good health, able to sit at a desk working at a computer, engage in light to moderate physical activity including sitting, walking, bending, and carrying supplies.
