Job Overview:

The role involves the independent development, execution, and management of strategies and initiatives aimed at ensuring adherence to relevant federal, state, and local Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) regulations, as well as the organization’s EH&S and Workplace Safety (WPS) policies and standards. This position plays a crucial part in the advancement of Environmental Health and Safety programs through effective implementation, assessment, monitoring, and enhancement efforts. The specialist contributes to the safeguarding of employee health and safety by executing EH&S programs and training initiatives independently. High-quality service is ensured by addressing standard issues and serving as a resource for EH&S and WPS inquiries. The specialist is responsible for identifying and evaluating hazards and risks by formulating and executing best practices for recognizing, analyzing, documenting, and communicating both standard and nonstandard workplace environmental health and safety risk trends. Comprehensive analyses and reports regarding the status of environmental health and safety are prepared to ensure risk management through the interpretation of general guidelines that promote workplace safety and compliance, as well as the evaluation of the effectiveness of measures aimed at improving workplace safety outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Foster effective relationships by proactively providing resources, information, guidance, and expertise to colleagues and stakeholders. Engage in self-development by creating actionable plans to leverage strengths and address weaknesses, influencing others through technical insights and examples.   • Execute work assignments independently by applying current expertise in the field to generate innovative solutions, ensuring adherence to all procedures and policies. Collaborate across functions to resolve business challenges, escalating issues or risks as necessary while communicating progress and information effectively. Identify, monitor, and prioritize deadlines and expectations, implementing improvements for team efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance standards are met by independently developing, executing, and managing strategies and programs that facilitate adherence to applicable EH&S regulations and organizational policies. Serve as a liaison for all EH&S regulatory inspections and surveys, identifying downstream impacts for compliance.
  • Promote training and continuous learning regarding Environmental Health and Safety by actively pursuing development opportunities and integrating feedback into daily tasks. Independently present safety education and training programs for management and staff, conducting competency assessments to measure training effectiveness.
  • Engage in safety practices by independently educating employees and key stakeholders on safety protocols, reporting, investigating, and analyzing safety incidents as required, and implementing changes to enhance the employee safety program.
  • Plan and schedule work related to Health and Safety programs independently, conducting assessments and analyses to evaluate health and safety programs with minimal supervision, and making significant recommendations for program enhancements based on observations.
  • Recognize and assess hazards and risks by independently developing and implementing best practices for assessments and data analysis to identify workplace environmental health and safety risk trends.
  • Contribute to risk management by implementing changes that enhance workplace safety and compliance, gathering input from stakeholders to evaluate the effectiveness of these changes.
  • Respond to complaints and resolve standard and nonstandard issues, acting as a consultant/resource for local administration and staff on EH&S and WPS matters.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Natural Science, Engineering, Emergency Management, or a related field AND a minimum of three (3) years of experience in environmental health and safety, risk management, or a directly related field OR a minimum of six (6) years of experience in environmental health and safety, risk management, or a directly related field.
  • Healthcare Environmental Manager Certificate, Industrial Hygienist Certificate, Health Safety Professional Certificate, Safety Professional Certificate, or Associate Safety Professional Certification to be obtained within 24 months of hire.
