ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The Community Development Department (CDD) serves as the planning agency for the City of Cambridge, addressing various aspects of urban life. Our mission is to cultivate a livable, sustainable, equitable, and just community for all who reside, work, study, and engage in Cambridge. We collaborate with community partners, government entities, businesses, and residents to enhance the quality of life in our city.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

CDD is seeking a part-time Community Engagement Specialist to connect with American-born Black communities in Cambridge as part of its Community Engagement Team. Reporting to the Community Engagement Manager, this role requires a proactive presence in local neighborhoods, supporting outreach initiatives to engage a diverse population and promote community leadership.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Familiarize yourself with the resources provided by CDD to residents of Cambridge.
  • Engage with American-born Black communities in Cambridge, promoting CDD programs, services, and planning efforts while considering the historical context of racism in the U.S. and its implications in Cambridge.
  • Encourage participation from American-born Black community members in CDD public events and city planning activities. This may involve distributing flyers, utilizing social media, attending community events, facilitating focus groups, visiting local businesses or places of worship, conducting surveys, and exploring other engagement methods.
  • Contribute to discussions and educate CDD staff on outreach strategies aimed at building relationships with diverse communities in Cambridge, particularly American-born Black communities.
  • Attend all mandatory meetings and training sessions, and complete assigned tasks, including documenting outreach activities and participating in program evaluations.
  • Assist in eliminating barriers to access for CDD resources, programs, and planning processes.
  • This position may offer hybrid work options under the City's Telework Policy, depending on operational requirements.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to connect and relate to the American-born Black community in Cambridge.
  • Proficient English language skills for effective communication.
  • Preference for candidates who are residents of Cambridge.
  • A genuine commitment to working with underserved and underrepresented communities in Cambridge.
  • Willingness to learn about CDD programs, services, and processes.
  • Strong motivation and effective time management skills.
  • Ability to collaborate within a team environment.
  • The City of Cambridge values diversity; applicants should be able to engage effectively with individuals from various identities, cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies.
  • Familiarity with the American-born Black community in Cambridge is preferred, along with an understanding of the impacts of historical and structural racism on this community.
