Earth Science Consultant

LAC Federal requires an experienced Earth Science Consultant to provide technical assistance and expertise to support Carnegie Science in reviewing methodologies and tools used in modeling instrument response curves. The goal is to enable batch processing of raw digital files into miniSEED format for upload into EarthScope/DMC.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Instrument Response Review
    1. Review inventory of network documentation on instrument responses, including printouts, notebooks, and Exabyte tapes.
    2. Determine the method used to generate original printouts by reviewing code from select Exabyte tapes.
    3. Reconstruct the work of Paul Silver from the early 1990s and attempt to recreate his instrument response model.
    4. Determine the origin of initial instrument response curves used by Steve Golden.
  2. Response Curve Modeling
    1. Reach out to the seismic community to identify comparable digitization efforts of older non-standardized seismic recordings.
    2. Conduct testing of poles and zeros through routines that remove or add instrument responses.
    3. Test and compare results across the network to identify potential variations from station to station.
  3. Program Development and Testing
    1. Create or update process flow charts for programs currently used to create finalized digital files.
    2. Review inputs, parameters, outputs to identify potential efficiencies or methods to improve accuracy.
    3. Review time-series analysis filters, tapers, detrending, resampling, Fourier transformations and recommend improvements or alternatives.
    4. Implement and test upgraded programs until correct output is achieved.
  4. Finalization and Report Submission
    1. Testing batch processing to ensure programs can be run in the background.
    2. Correct and revise programs as needed.
  5. Submission of a Final Report summarizing all work.

Requirements:

An advanced degree in Geoscience with special concentration on seismology and geophysics is required.
