Position Overview:


The Surgical Services Technician II role is primarily designed to operate under the direct guidance of a registered nurse.

This position involves a variety of responsibilities aimed at supporting surgical operations and associated activities within the operating room.

The Surgical Services Technician II is committed to delivering care in accordance with the standards set forth by the Association of Surgical Technologists, ensuring that services are provided in a cost-effective manner while maintaining high-quality care.

Possessing a solid understanding of sterile and aseptic techniques, the Surgical Services Technician II integrates knowledge of human anatomy, surgical protocols, and the use of surgical instruments to assist physicians during invasive, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures.

This role requires demonstrated proficiency in scrubbing for both minor and major surgical as well as endoscopic procedures. It is important to note that the Surgical Services Technician II is classified as a non-certified technician.

In addition, the Surgical Services Technician II engages in departmental quality assessment and improvement initiatives, adheres to hospital continuing education and certification mandates, participates in educational activities for students, and embodies the philosophy and objectives of Patient Care Services. The technician is expected to demonstrate knowledge of the Recommended Standards of Practice by the Association of Surgical Technologists and AORN's Age-Specific Competency Statements, reflecting ongoing professional development.

Performance evaluation is conducted based on observations made by the Nurse Manager and/or Educational Specialist in accordance with operating room policies and procedures.


Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited Surgical Technician Program is required.

Certification as a Certified Surgical Technician (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or an equivalent credential is mandatory.

Current AHA CPR certification is required. A minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience is preferred. The technician must maintain a professional appearance and demonstrate understanding, patience, and tact when interacting with physicians and colleagues. Attention to detail is crucial, along with excellent hand-eye coordination.

Self-motivation and the ability to work efficiently and effectively are essential. The role requires working in a climate-controlled environment with temperatures ranging from 65-73 degrees and humidity levels between 45-55%. In pediatric cases, temperatures may rise to 85-90 degrees F. The technician is required to wear hospital-provided scrubs while on duty.

Potential hazards include cuts, bruises, muscle strains, and exposure to infectious diseases through bodily fluids. There is also a risk of exposure to anesthesia waste gases, ethylene oxide, harsh disinfectants, sterilizing agents, high steam pressure agents, and radiation. A willingness to collaborate with colleagues possessing varying levels of skill, knowledge, and abilities is essential.
