Job Overview:
As a vital member of the Operating Room (OR) team at OSS Health, the Surgical Services Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring a safe and efficient surgical experience for patients. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, you will assist in various aspects of surgical preparation and execution.

Qualifications and Education:
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
  • Certifications: Certification as a Surgical Technologist is required.
  • Experience: Previous experience in an Ambulatory Surgical facility or acute care setting is preferred.
    • Surgical Tech I: Prior experience as a surgical technician is strongly preferred.
    • Surgical Tech II: A minimum of three years of experience as a surgical technician is required.
  • Must possess BLS certification or the ability to obtain it within one year.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage time effectively are essential.
  • Proficient computer skills and excellent communication abilities are required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is essential.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and verify all necessary instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment for surgical procedures.
  • Adhere to aseptic techniques during the setup and execution of surgical cases.
  • Maintain an organized back table and mayo stand throughout the procedure.
  • Assist the circulating nurse with sponge, needle, and instrument counts, promptly reporting any discrepancies.
  • Demonstrate proper handling of instruments to prevent damage and loss.
  • Keep surgeon preference cards updated and accurate.
  • Assist with dressing applications and patient transfers.
  • Contribute to the cleaning of the surgical room and preparation for subsequent cases.
  • Adapt to changes in workload and collaborate effectively with team members.
  • Support the orientation of new staff as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding patient and organizational information.
  • Ensure safety protocols are followed during all procedures.
  • Conduct pre-operative checks on OR equipment to confirm proper functioning.
  • Participate in safety evaluations and adhere to infection control guidelines consistently.
  • May assist in the instrument room by washing, sterilizing, and wrapping instruments.

Additional Responsibilities for Level II:
  • May train newly hired staff as necessary.
  • May take on additional responsibilities such as special projects or research.
  • Exhibit expertise in executing the duties of the position.

Work Environment:
Work is performed in a surgical setting with exposure to bloodborne pathogens, anesthetic gases, and other potential hazards. The role may involve stressful situations and occasional irregular hours.

Physical Demands:
Moderate physical effort is required, including standing, walking, and lifting up to 25 pounds frequently, with occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds. Quick response to emergencies is essential.

Language Skills:
Effective communication with staff, peers, and physicians is required, with fluency in English necessary.
