Job Summary:
As a Cardiac Monitor Specialist at Kaiser Permanente, you will play a vital role in ensuring the highest level of patient care. Under general supervision, you will perform arrhythmia or ECG monitor observations on assigned shifts and communicate changes to the nursing staff. Your expertise will be utilized to record variations in the action of the heart muscle for use in the diagnosis of heart ailments in an in-patient setting. You will prepare graphs and reports, upholding Kaiser Permanente's policies and procedures, principles of responsibilities, and applicable state, federal, and local laws.
Essential Responsibilities:
  • Establish and maintain courteous and cooperative relations with the public, patients, and other personnel by demonstrating skills consistent with the organization's philosophy of providing extraordinary customer relations and quality service.
  • Observe cardiac rhythms of patients on monitors, run and post rhythm strips at designated intervals, and interpret rhythms and validate computer readouts.
  • Check and verify lead placement on patients, compare posted strips to previous strips, and notify nursing staff of changes.
  • Recognize and respond to unusual or abnormal patient conditions, clean equipment after each patient use, and test equipment for proper working order.
  • Maintain work areas clean and orderly, answer telephones, and relay messages.
  • Assume other activities and responsibilities from time to time as directed, explain and answer questions regarding equipment function and procedures, and obtain all scheduled ECGs in the in-patient setting.
  • Obtain STAT ECGs in the in-patient setting, utilize correct lead placement for various cardiac monitoring devices/procedures, prepare EKGs, and prepare patients for and perform a variety of cardiac monitoring and testing procedures.
  • Obtain, compile, prepare, and maintain records for the nursing unit assigned, perform computer data entry and retrieval, and maintain equipment in operating order.
  • Notify supervisors of needed repairs, initiate work tickets as per department workflow, and perform routine cleaning/maintenance of cardiac equipment as per department workflow and infection control policy.
  • Assist providers with access to various cardiac monitor reports and perform other related duties as required.

Education
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Formal EKG or arrhythmia class with a minimum of 20 hours.
License, Certification, Registration
  • Basic Life Support
Additional Requirements:
  • Adequate hearing either alone or with a hearing device.
  • Successful completion of arrhythmia updated within the last two (2) years if basic arrhythmia class taken over two years ago.
  • Successful completion of the Kaiser Permanente basic arrhythmia assessment test with a score of 80% or better.
  • Ability to organize and communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize cardiac arrhythmias, artifacts.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous monitor observer experience preferred.
