Role Summary

Wheeling University, a dynamic Catholic institution, is seeking applications for the role of Campus Security Specialist. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to fostering a safe environment for students and staff while upholding the values of the University. This position entails safeguarding individuals on campus and ensuring the security of University facilities, including buildings, parking areas, walkways, and grounds. The Specialist will serve as a key resource during non-business hours and weekends when the University is not operational. Availability for various shifts, including weekends, evenings, holidays, and special events, is essential. Additional responsibilities may be assigned, and the role requires being on-call at all times.

Key Responsibilities

The Campus Security Specialist may be tasked with the following essential duties:
  • Serve as the primary responder to campus emergencies, both medical and criminal, that may pose risks to safety.
  • Ensure the safety of students, staff, visitors, and University property.
  • Conduct regular and visible patrols of the campus during assigned shifts.
  • Perform routine inspections of buildings to confirm security measures are in place and identify maintenance issues.
  • Monitor for any unusual activities or behaviors.
  • Respond to requests for assistance and collaborate with emergency services as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate logs and reports of activities and incidents.
  • Stay informed of updates and special notices relevant to campus safety.
  • Utilize University-related software and systems effectively.
  • Manage access to buildings by locking and unlocking doors as per schedule.
  • Enforce parking regulations and issue citations as required.
  • Assess maintenance needs and perform inspections of electrical and plumbing systems.
  • Implement campus policies related to safety and security.
  • Support Residence Life in enforcing hall regulations and addressing conduct violations.
  • Conduct inspections of campus facilities to identify any unusual occurrences.
  • Monitor for potential threats, including trespassers and environmental hazards.
  • Unlock buildings for scheduled events and ensure security post-event.
  • Report hazardous conditions to the Director of Public Safety.
  • Control access to the campus during duty hours.
  • Assist visitors and provide necessary directions.
  • Oversee parking areas and manage traffic flow as needed.
  • Enforce campus regulations regarding smoking, alcohol, and drug use.
  • Observe and report on weather conditions that may affect campus safety.
  • Conduct investigations of policy violations, including reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses.
  • Act as a liaison with local law enforcement agencies.
  • Perform incidental custodial and maintenance tasks as required.
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills Required

Physical Abilities

  • Capable of operating communication devices and surveillance systems.
  • Physical stamina to perform duties that may include climbing, lifting, and prolonged standing or walking.
  • Ability to analyze situations, solve problems, and make decisions under pressure.
