About the Role

The City of Somerville is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to lead the Planning, Preservation, and Zoning Division of the Mayor's Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee the core long-range planning, ordinance development, and permit administration functions of the Division.
  • Supervise staff and lead Historic Preservation efforts for the City of Somerville.
  • Develop a clear vision and mission for the Division and establish goals, objectives, and annual work plans.
  • Manage the Division's budget, grants, and other financing, and track and assess financial performance.
  • Make strategic decisions about personnel and financial resource allocation, hiring, evaluation, and promotion of staff, and consultant selection.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with elected officials, advocacy organizations, neighborhood organizations, and other metropolitan, state, or federal agencies and institutions.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree and five to seven years of experience, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Certification by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) is desired.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
  • Thorough knowledge of zoning and land use regulations in Somerville.
  • Extensive knowledge of urban planning and economic development.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public and handle problems and emergencies.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information and manage records.
  • Ability to deal with external clients, City employees, City officials, and other state and federal agencies.
Work Environment

The work environment involves everyday office conditions with occasional exposure to outside elements.
