Job Overview

Key Responsibilities

The essential duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Acting as a representative of the Director of Inspectional Services/Building Commissioner to ensure compliance with the Somerville Zoning Ordinance.
  • Conducting thorough reviews of project plans to verify consistency with zoning regulations.
  • Performing regular site inspections during construction phases to confirm compliance with zoning certificates.
  • Generating clear and precise reports for projects identified as non-compliant for further review.
  • Collaborating with the Senior Zoning Review Planner to assess building proposals for zoning compliance.
  • Engaging in research and data analysis to support planning initiatives.
  • Reviewing plans submitted to the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, and Conservation Commission for adherence to codes and procedural requirements.
  • Monitoring projects during and after construction to ensure compliance with conditions set by the ZBA and Planning Board.
  • Providing zoning opinions and recommendations for by-law and ordinance amendments.
  • Offering information to the public regarding city ordinances and regulations.
  • Facilitating professional and technical administrative approvals in line with local and state regulations.
Qualifications

Education and Experience: A college degree coupled with a minimum of three years of relevant experience is required; an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that equips the candidate with the necessary knowledge and skills will also be considered. A Master's degree in Planning or a related field is preferred.

Skills and Abilities

Knowledge: A solid understanding of planning, conservation, economic development, and infrastructure is essential.

Abilities: The ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with various stakeholders including state and federal agencies, architects, contractors, and the general public is crucial. Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical, civil, and architectural drawings is required.

Skills: Experience in public presentations and facilitation is advantageous.

Work Environment

This position involves a typical office environment with occasional exposure to outdoor elements. The role may require working beyond standard business hours to attend meetings or complete assignments. Fieldwork may involve visiting construction sites and navigating various terrains.

Physical and Mental Requirements
