Job Overview
As a Mechanical Assembly Technician, you will utilize your electrical and mechanical expertise to assemble locomotive components by following detailed written and visual guidelines.

Operational Responsibilities
Your tasks will encompass wiring, mechanical assembly, fabrication, and repair activities. Key responsibilities include:

  • Routing wiring throughout the cab unit and underframe;
  • Measuring, cutting, and connecting wires to specified lengths;
  • Assessing the continuity of wires and cables;
  • Fitting, assembling, connecting, and installing system components;
  • Employing stripping and crimping tools, voltmeters, jigs, measurement instruments, as well as hand and power tools;
  • Aligning major components;
  • Assisting welders with preparation, repair, and grinding tasks;
  • Masking locomotives for painting;
  • Utilizing computers to access instructional documents.

Essential Physical Activities
As part of this role, you will be required to:

  • Strength: Lift and carry up to 35 lbs, push and pull up to 50 lbs;
  • Motion: Engage in constant walking, frequent bending, crouching, kneeling, squatting, and overhead reaching, as well as climbing ladders;
  • Vision/Hearing: Follow written and verbal instructions and respond to audible alarms;
  • Work Environment: Operate on various surfaces including concrete and gravel, at heights from floor level to the tops of locomotives, and in confined spaces. The environment is non-temperature controlled and subject to all weather conditions with high noise and dust levels;
  • Emotional Demands: Be comfortable working independently due to the nature of the environment;
  • Safety: Adhere to safety protocols as this position is sensitive to safety risks associated with active tracks, rail cars, locomotives, and other moving equipment. Compliance with all safety regulations and use of required personal protective equipment is mandatory.

Qualifications and Experience
To be successful in this role, candidates should possess:

  • The ability to read and interpret schematics, wire running lists, and blueprints;
  • Proficiency in using various hand and power tools and measuring devices;
  • Experience working in a Windows environment to access assembly instructions and reference documents;
  • A focus on safety and quality;
  • A commitment to continuous improvement.
