Orthopedic Surgical Technologist at Swedish Health Services

Employment Type: Full Time (40 Hours per Week)

Shift: Day Shift with 10 Hour Shifts

Hiring Incentive: $10,000 for eligible external candidates meeting all conditions for payment, in addition to a comprehensive benefits and compensation package starting on your first day.

The Orthopedic Surgical Technologist plays a crucial role in the surgical environment by ensuring the availability and organization of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies. This position requires collaboration with a multidisciplinary surgical team, including registered nurses, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other medical personnel, to deliver exceptional patient care aligned with the values and mission of Swedish Health Services.

  • Acts as the primary scrub person during assigned surgical procedures, ensuring that all equipment and supplies are prepared and arranged according to established protocols. Maintains an organized supply of fluids and medications for use during operations. Assists the surgical team by handing instruments, holding retractors, cutting sutures, and performing other tasks as directed by the surgeon. Anticipates the needs of the surgical team to facilitate the surgical process efficiently.
  • Coordinates the setup of equipment, supplies, and instrumentation based on the surgeon's preferences, and collaborates with the surgical team to maintain and update preference cards.
  • Demonstrates proficiency across various specialty areas and adapts to different roles with minimal notice. Recognizes the significance of patient age and size in preparation for surgical interventions.
  • Aids team members in patient positioning, transportation, and room turnover, including the cleaning and sterilization of instruments. Competent in operating sterilization equipment.
  • Assists in patient preparation and draping, anticipating the surgical team's needs for supplies and instruments while applying sterile techniques. Works in partnership with the circulating nurse to uphold AORN standards.
  • Initiates and maintains accurate counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments as per established policies.
  • Familiar with the operation and location of surgical equipment, ensuring proper handling and maintenance of specialized tools.
  • Cultivates positive working relationships with all healthcare team members, effectively communicating any procedural progress or issues to the circulating nurse. Maintains focus on the surgical procedure while ensuring appropriate conversation.
  • Handles specimens according to established protocols.
  • Prioritizes tasks effectively and utilizes non-direct care time efficiently, offering assistance to colleagues as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Completion of a surgical technician vocational program or equivalent training documentation.
  • Washington Surgical Technologist Registration upon hire.
  • National Provider BLS certification from the American Heart Association upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Six months of experience in a hospital operating room setting.

The listed compensation range is the base pay; additional compensation may be available for this role, including shift differentials, overtime, and bonus opportunities.
