General Overview of the Role

  • Assume responsibility for direct patient care under the guidance of a registered nurse or physician in the designated care area. Deliver nursing services to patients and their families in alignment with the scope of practice for LPNs as established by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide and document direct nursing care for assigned patients under the supervision of a registered nurse or physician. Care is informed by physician orders and the nursing care plan. Report patient responses to care to a registered nurse for assessment, intervention, and adjustment of the care plan. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals in delivering patient care.
  • Assist physicians and nursing staff in executing various diagnostic procedures.
  • Assess nursing care with a focus on procedures and patient responses; support the delivery of nursing care and the prioritization of nursing tasks.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of policies and procedures that ensure the emotional and physical comfort and safety of patients; engage in the creation of new policies.
  • Participate in maintaining the care environment, including equipment and material resources.
  • Engage in identifying opportunities for clinical or operational performance improvement and assist in related activities.
  • Support the management of material resources and maintenance; assist in evaluating the effectiveness of materials and equipment and report any malfunctions to the charge nurse.
  • Participate in educational programs and other training sessions within the service.
  • Assist in onboarding new staff members.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications

Education
  • Graduation from an accredited Practical Nurse program is required.
Experience
  • No prior experience is necessary.
Licensure and Certification
  • Current LPN licensure in the State of North Carolina is mandatory.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Understanding of the scope of practice for licensed practical nurses, with the ability to delegate tasks to nursing support staff.
  • Extensive knowledge of patient care and treatment procedures relevant to practical nursing. Capable of independently seeking resources and collaborating effectively.
  • Strong communication skills to interact clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare teams, physicians, and leadership.
  • Able to educate patients and families according to the nursing care plan.
  • Competent in BLS and/or other specialized life support requirements as designated by the work area or organization.
  • Proficient in using fine motor skills for documentation and recording activities.
  • Familiar with computer systems and capable of learning new software applications.
  • Able to navigate the healthcare entity to provide effective clinical care.
  • Capable of enduring prolonged periods of standing and walking.
  • Ability to maintain focus and organization in a dynamic environment.
  • Working knowledge of sterile techniques and procedures relevant to nursing tasks.
  • Understanding of sanitation, personal hygiene, and health and safety protocols applicable in a hospital setting.
  • Knowledge of infection control practices and safety measures; ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Familiarity with JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.
  • Pre-employment Physical Capacity Testing is required.
