Position Overview

The role of the Bus Driver is crucial in ensuring the safe transportation of students to and from educational institutions, designated bus stops, extracurricular activities, and other school-related events. This position requires drivers to assist students in boarding and alighting from the vehicle, while also ensuring their safety throughout the journey.

Key Responsibilities

The following duties are essential to the role of Bus Driver and represent the primary functions of this position:

  • Operate the bus with a strong awareness of driving conditions and surroundings, adhering to established safety protocols and driving regulations.
  • Comply with all Federal and State transportation regulations.
  • Ensure that all passengers are securely fastened in their seats, including the use of car seats or seat belts as required.
  • Facilitate timely pick-up and drop-off of students.
  • Observe and follow all traffic laws diligently.
  • Assist passengers on and off the bus as needed, particularly those with special requirements, ensuring their safety at all times.
  • Educate students on safety practices and maintain order on the bus, reporting any disruptive behavior to school authorities.
  • Signal students when it is safe to cross streets and ensure they have safely crossed before departing.
  • Conduct routine safety inspections and maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the vehicle.
  • Collaborate in planning and executing transportation routes, identifying the most efficient paths for daily operations.
  • Ensure the bus adheres to regular maintenance schedules and report any mechanical issues to a supervisor.
  • Work closely with transportation staff to provide effective and safe services within the public school system.
  • Familiarize Bus Assistants with emergency evacuation procedures and coordinate assistance as necessary.
  • Participate in mandatory training sessions.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to comprehend and follow both written and verbal instructions. Proficiency in reading and writing English. Familiarity with local, state, and federal transportation laws and regulations. Understanding of vehicle operations and maintenance. Knowledge of local roads and transportation routes, with the ability to interpret public road maps. Capacity to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff. Competence in providing customer service to individuals with special needs. Physical ability to perform tasks such as climbing, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Flexibility to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and hours.

Education and Experience:
Preferred CPR/First Aid Certification; High School Diploma or GED; supplemented by one to two years of experience in student or public transportation, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess and maintain a valid commercial driver's license with the appropriate endorsements and a satisfactory driving record.

Physical Requirements:
Must possess sensory skills necessary for effective communication and interaction with students and staff. Frequent sitting, walking, standing, and bending are required, along with the ability to lift and carry items as needed. Regular adherence to established work schedules is essential.
