Position Overview
The primary role of the Bus Driver is to ensure the safe and efficient transportation of students to various educational institutions, designated bus stops, extracurricular activities, and other school-related events. This position requires assisting students in boarding and alighting from the vehicle, while also ensuring their safety throughout the journey. The role involves physical activities, including lifting and carrying, as well as maintaining a clean and safe environment within the vehicle.
Key Responsibilities
The following duties are essential functions of the Bus Driver role, and while they are representative of the tasks performed, they may not encompass every task associated with the position:
- Safely operates the bus while being vigilant of road conditions and surroundings, adhering to all safety protocols and driving regulations.
- Complies with all Federal and State transportation laws and guidelines.
- Ensures that all passengers are securely fastened in their seats, including the use of car seats or seat belts, both when stationary and in motion.
- Facilitates timely pick-up and drop-off of students.
- Observes and follows all traffic laws and regulations.
- Stops at designated locations to assist passengers, particularly those with special needs, ensuring their safety at all times.
- Educates students on safety practices and maintains discipline on the bus, reporting any inappropriate behavior to school authorities.
- Signals students when it is safe to cross streets and ensures they have safely crossed before departing.
- Conducts routine safety inspections and maintenance of the bus, ensuring cleanliness and sanitation.
- Assists in planning and executing transportation routes, identifying the most efficient paths for daily operations, and maintaining logs of transportation activities.
- Ensures the bus adheres to regular maintenance schedules and reports any mechanical issues to the supervisor.
- Collaborates with transportation staff to provide safe and effective transportation services for the school district.
- Familiarizes Bus Assistants with emergency evacuation procedures and coordinates with volunteers as necessary.
- Participates in mandatory training sessions.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to comprehend and follow both written and verbal instructions. Proficiency in reading and writing English. Understanding of local, state, and federal transportation laws. Familiarity with vehicle operations and basic maintenance. Knowledge of local roads and transportation routes, with the ability to interpret maps. Capacity to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff. Skills in providing compassionate service to individuals with special needs. Physical ability to perform tasks such as lifting up to 50 pounds and working outdoors in varying weather conditions. Flexibility to work varied hours.
Education and Experience:
Preferred CPR/First Aid Certification; High School Diploma or GED; supplemented by two years of experience in student or public transportation, or a combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid commercial driver's license with appropriate endorsements and maintain a clean driving record. Must meet the physical requirements set by the Department of Transportation.
Physical Requirements
Must possess sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with others. Frequent activities include sitting, walking, standing, bending, and reaching. Ability to lift and carry objects as required. Regular adherence to work schedules is essential.
