Position Overview

The primary role of the Bus Driver is to ensure the safe and efficient transportation of students to and from educational institutions, designated bus stops, extracurricular activities, and other school-related events. This position requires drivers to assist students in boarding and alighting from the vehicle, ensuring their safety at all times. The job may involve moderate physical activity, including lifting and carrying, and requires adherence to safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities

The following duties are essential functions of the Bus Driver role, and while they represent typical tasks, they are not exhaustive. Management may assign additional responsibilities as needed.

  • Operate the bus with a strong awareness of road conditions and safety regulations.
  • Comply with all Federal and State transportation laws.
  • Ensure passengers are securely fastened in their seats, including the use of car seats or seat belts, both when stationary and in motion.
  • Guarantee timely pick-up and drop-off of students.
  • Adhere to all traffic laws and regulations.
  • Assist students on and off the bus, providing special attention to those with unique needs.
  • Educate students on safety practices and maintain discipline on the bus.
  • Signal students to cross streets safely and ensure they have crossed before departing.
  • Conduct safety inspections and maintain the cleanliness of the bus.
  • Assist in planning transportation routes and prepare daily logs of activities.
  • Ensure the bus is maintained according to scheduled service and report any issues to a supervisor.
  • Collaborate with transportation staff to provide effective service.
  • Familiarize Bus Assistants with emergency procedures and coordinate assistance as necessary.
  • Participate in required training sessions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Proficiency in reading and writing English. Familiarity with local, state, and federal transportation laws. Understanding of vehicle operations and maintenance. Knowledge of local roads and routes, with the ability to interpret maps. Strong interpersonal skills to maintain effective relationships with students and staff. Experience in providing customer service, particularly to individuals with special needs. Physical capability to perform job duties, including lifting up to 50 pounds and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Education and Experience:
Preferred CPR/First Aid Certification; High School Diploma or GED; supplemented by 1-2 years of experience in student or public transportation, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid commercial driver's license with appropriate endorsements and maintain a satisfactory driving record.

Physical Requirements:
Must have the sensory skills necessary for effective communication and interaction with others. Frequent sitting, walking, standing, and occasional bending and kneeling are required. Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally. Adherence to established work schedules is essential. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for individuals with disabilities.
