Positioned in Washington, DC, the Vice President (VP) for Strategy and Research at CGD reports directly to the President. The VP serves as a strategic partner to the President and plays a vital role in several key domains, including crafting a vision and strategy for CGD that adapts to major transformations in the global development and geopolitical environment; supervising a research agenda that culminates in the production of rigorous, pertinent, and impactful outputs; and advocating for innovative analysis and bold perspectives on critical issues and trends. Furthermore, the VP will possess a robust background in research and publication, which they will continue to pursue as a Senior Fellow.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage portfolios aligned with areas of expertise;
  • Act as a senior policy fellow, engaging actively in research and analysis pertinent to CGD's mission;
  • Assist the President in shaping a forward-looking vision for CGD that is evidence-based, innovative, and responsive to the evolving development and geopolitical context;
  • Oversee the formulation and implementation of CGD's strategic priorities, ensuring alignment with program objectives;
  • Direct a research agenda that supports the creation and dissemination of both academic and policy-focused research that is innovative, rigorous, and impactful, including through collaborative discussions and peer reviews with CGD and external experts;
  • Inspire and support research personnel in pursuing ambitious ideas and translating evidence-based concepts into actionable policy outcomes;
  • Facilitate collaboration and convenings that generate research on significant cross-cutting issues and trends beyond specific sectors, including initiatives that span multiple CGD programs;
  • Support the establishment and execution of strategic research partnerships with academic institutions and organizations;
  • Drive the development and execution of strategic partnerships, in collaboration with program and policy outreach directors, to enhance CGD's influence in a dynamic geopolitical and development landscape;
  • Collaborate with policy outreach directors to devise and implement strategies to elevate CGD's public visibility;
  • Manage relationships with funders, in partnership with the senior director for institutional advancement, to cultivate strong, trusting, and substantive long-term partnerships and ensure coordinated oversight across grants and funding proposals;
  • Work alongside the communications director to amplify the profile and reach of CGD and its research initiatives, including through events, media, and other channels;
  • Engage key stakeholders and the public to enhance the visibility and impact of CGD and its research;
  • Participate as a member of CGD's leadership team and lead or contribute to organizational initiatives as assigned.
Compensation: $275,000 - $300,000. Salary commensurate with qualifications, skills, and experience.

CGD operates in a hybrid model, requiring all staff to be present in the office at least two days per week. CGD is authorized to employ individuals residing in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Candidates must be able to declare a primary residence in one of these three locations.

CGD will sponsor work authorization for this position, contingent upon the successful petitioning for and securing of the required work visa(s).
