Job Overview

OBJECTIVE OF THE POSITION

The Senior Underwriter for Business Credit Services plays a crucial role in evaluating new and renewal credit applications for business financing, which includes working capital lines, asset-based credit lines, commercial real estate loans (both Owner Occupied and Investor), and equipment financing solutions. This position collaborates closely with Relationship Managers to effectively communicate findings, including the rationale behind decisions and risk mitigation strategies, to secure credit approvals that align with client needs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct thorough analysis of business operations, industry trends, and financial data to assess credit requests; identify significant business and financial risks that could affect the borrower's ability to repay; formulate conclusions that support credit recommendations based on documented evidence and sound judgment.
  • Draft precise and timely credit recommendations with minimal oversight, which include: (1) quantitative elements within the underwriting report that document the credit analysis; (2) appropriate application of risk rating models to ensure accurate risk assessments; (3) correct identification and management of any exceptions to bank policies and compliance regulations; and (4) accurate loan classification that reflects the nature of the borrowing relationship and credit terms.
  • Monitor the financial performance of borrowers in accordance with commercial and real estate loan agreements; ensure financial statements are analyzed per bank guidelines and that covenant calculations are accurate and complete, adhering to approval conditions. Work in partnership with Relationship Managers to ensure timely borrower notifications and approvals for any violations.
  • Collaborate with Relationship Managers to provide insights into clients' financial requirements. Offer perspectives on the effectiveness of loan structures in mitigating risks, tailored to the current competitive market landscape and the bank's risk appetite.
  • Engage with Relationship Managers during client and prospect meetings as necessary.
  • May supervise the activities of other underwriters or credit analysts, ensuring the quality and timeliness of credit memos prepared by peers before submission for approval.
  • Adhere to all banking regulations pertinent to the role and responsibilities, acquiring knowledge through training and on-the-job experience. Stay informed about changes in regulations.
  • Comply with all bank policies and procedures, including compliance regulations, and complete all mandatory training specific to the role.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of the bank's established policies and procedures.
  • May be called upon to mentor or train colleagues and lead training sessions as a subject matter expert.
  • Travel may be required to fulfill essential job functions.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR SUCCESS

  • A bachelor's degree in business, finance, or a related field, or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience in banking or financial services.
  • Strong grasp of commercial lending financial analysis and business structures.
  • In-depth knowledge of financial statements to assess creditworthiness and associated risks.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise written analyses using the bank's established formats for presentation to management or loan committees.
  • Demonstrated capability to analyze financial data and account information swiftly and thoroughly.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word, is essential.
