Position Summary

The Vice President of Operations (VPO) is accountable for the operational effectiveness of SPUR, ensuring that the organization's strategic plan is in harmony with its vision and mission through its operational activities. The VPO provides strategic leadership and operational management for SPUR's financial, human resources, communications, and public engagement functions, collaborating closely with SPUR's fundraising team for the development and execution of the business plan. This role reports directly to the President & CEO and is an integral member of SPUR's senior leadership team.

The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of business operations and a proven track record in strategic planning. They will be a capable leader who can offer guidance that enhances performance in alignment with the organization's vision and culture.

The VPO will directly oversee SPUR's Communications, Engagement, Finance, and HR teams, as well as manage contractors that support SPUR's Finance function, building management, and recruitment initiatives. Additionally, the VPO will work closely with the CEO to actualize their vision for organizational transformation and growth, operationalizing these strategies to propel the organization forward, while managing a dynamic portfolio of projects. The VPO serves as a vital thought partner to the President & CEO on matters related to business and financial planning, organizational structure, internal management, and operational strategies for external effectiveness.

This position is suited for an individual who has a profound understanding of aligning financial strategies with mission objectives; possesses exceptional organizational management and interpersonal skills; demonstrates a sharp strategic mindset; adopts an assets-based approach to organizational development; and exhibits a high level of proficiency in executing goals and strategies. As with all leadership roles at SPUR, this position is for a proactive individual who finds professional fulfillment in achieving the highest standards of performance. We seek candidates who can lead with curiosity and possess strong problem-solving abilities. The candidate will be a connector and team-oriented, capable of establishing the culture and tone for the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with senior leadership to develop and manage the organization's strategic plan, including revenue and expense strategies.
  • Work closely with the fundraising team to facilitate the execution of revenue strategies.
  • Guide organizational work plans to ensure alignment with the business plan and mission.
  • Establish and implement mechanisms to evaluate SPUR's impact and competitiveness.
  • Directly manage and enhance the effectiveness of SPUR's business operations, recommending and executing improvements as necessary.
  • Oversee SPUR's communications and engagement functions, ensuring each maximizes SPUR's capacity to achieve its policy and fundraising objectives.
  • Supervise human resources operations, including training, employee development, and salary administration, and actively participate in recruitment efforts.
  • Produce and analyze financial documents, statements, and reports to evaluate organizational performance against financial targets and identify potential risks.
  • Ensure the organization has adequate resources to fulfill its mission.
  • Organize and coordinate operations to maximize productivity.
  • Supervise employee performance and provide constructive feedback to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Gather, analyze, and interpret data to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Assess overall organizational performance against established objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant laws and standards.
  • Oversee building management operations.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders.
  • Support relevant committees of SPUR's Board of Directors, including Finance, Audit, and Investment.

Qualifications & Skills

  • 10+ years of professional experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership capacity, preferably as a business manager or equivalent.
  • Exceptional organizational and leadership capabilities.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Robust financial management expertise.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, along with strong interpersonal abilities.
  • Comprehensive understanding of diverse business processes and strategy development.
  • Experience in communications is preferred.
  • An MBA or equivalent nonprofit experience is preferred but not mandatory.

Compensation & Benefits

The salary range for this position is $175,000-$200,000, based on experience and aligned with skills and qualifications. This is a full-time, exempt role. SPUR offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, dental coverage, vision care, basic life insurance, pre-tax commuter benefits, a work-from-home stipend, an employee assistance program (EAP), six months of paid maternity and paternity leave, and a retirement plan with a 25% contribution match.

Work Environment

All staff are required to attend mandatory in-person meetings on designated days, along with other necessary in-person engagements throughout the Bay Area region. All policies are subject to change.
