Position Overview

Under the general oversight of the Dean of Instruction, this role involves providing comprehensive instructional support to both students and faculty within a classroom or laboratory setting. Responsibilities include assisting with the operation of equipment, computers, and software applications, as well as preparing and maintaining biological, chemical, geological, and physical materials for laboratory activities. Additional clerical tasks will support the instructional program, along with other related duties as assigned.

This position entails a commitment of 20 hours per week, across a 10-month academic year.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support individual and small groups of students in an educational environment; address inquiries related to the subject matter, equipment usage, and other relevant issues; provide tutoring in line with established protocols.
  • Assist faculty in organizing, preparing, and presenting instructional materials; monitor laboratory supplies and place orders as necessary.
  • Ensure lab storage areas comply with safety standards and regulations.
  • Safely manage and dispose of biological, chemical, geological, and physical materials according to established procedures.
  • Care for live specimens and preserve biological materials as required.
  • Guide and oversee assigned activities and learning sessions.
  • Research and evaluate existing and new experiments regarding supplies, equipment, and methodologies.
  • Prepare instructional materials and operate various teaching aids; assist students in utilizing instructional equipment and software.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot teaching equipment and instruments.
  • Ensure the lab or classroom environment is friendly, safe, clean, and organized.
  • Manage inventory and distribution of supplies; maintain accurate records of materials and equipment.
  • Monitor budgetary aspects related to the science lab for effective financial management.
  • Update software and maintain computer systems.
  • Perform minor maintenance on lab equipment and coordinate repairs as needed.
  • Administer and evaluate assessments; assist in research and data compilation for projects.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and attendance; manage various student files.
  • Execute clerical tasks including answering phones, preparing instructional materials, and registering new students.
  • Perform janitorial duties within the science department as necessary.
  • Carry out additional related responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications

Employment Standards:
  • Education and Experience: Equivalent to high school graduation supplemented by two years of college coursework in a related field, with significant focus on Automotive, along with one year of tutoring or related experience. Community college experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of: Instructional materials and tutoring techniques; effective study methods; record-keeping practices; modern office operations; and basic proficiency in MS Office and related software.

Physical Characteristics:
  • Vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents.

  • Able to lift and move materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
