Position Summary
The Seeds Research team is currently in search of a Scientist I based in Durham, NC, at our Research Triangle Park Innovation Center.

Role Responsibilities
This position is essential for managing insectary control initiatives, concentrating on plant-centric assessments of genetically modified (GM) and genetically engineered (GE) crop varieties within the Seeds Research biotech framework.

The primary duties include:

  • Designing, executing, and coordinating plant bioassays and gene-efficacy evaluation trials in controlled environments such as greenhouses and growth chambers.
  • Collaborating closely with fellow scientists specializing in plant entomology, plant physiology, crop science, molecular biology, and data science to produce thorough data analyses and product outcomes.
  • Ensuring all activities align with Syngenta's Health, Safety, and Environmental Policy.

Key Accountabilities
Utilize extensive knowledge and experience to identify greenhouse challenges and devise effective solutions. Responsibilities also include:

  • Data collection and management, including database utilization and interpretation of results for stakeholders.
  • Conducting routine greenhouse tasks such as planting, watering, tissue sampling, pollination, harvesting, and seed processing, along with pest and disease management.
  • Communicating findings and progress clearly with supervisors and team members.
  • Developing and refining procedures and standards for plant bioassays and phenotyping, testing innovative concepts to enhance assay processes and plant management.
  • Documenting work meticulously to safeguard intellectual property.
  • Potentially leading interdisciplinary projects.
  • Flexibility to work during weekends and holidays as required.

Qualifications
Essential Knowledge
In-depth understanding of plant physiology, entomology, soil science, and agronomy, including:

  • Expertise in the dynamics between crop plants and significant insect species.
  • Familiarity with genetics and biotechnological applications.
  • Knowledge of greenhouse operations and integrated pest management (IPM).

Essential Experience
A degree in plant biology, agronomy, entomology, or a related field from an accredited institution is required, with the following experience levels:

  • Bachelor's degree with 8+ years of relevant experience, or
  • Master's degree with 4+ years of relevant experience, or
  • Ph.D. with 2+ years of relevant experience.

Preferred experience includes working with major field crops like corn and soybean, performing plant phenotyping using advanced high-throughput technologies, and designing bioassays in controlled settings.
