Role Overview:

We are in search of a driven Research Associate to join our Controlled Environment team.
The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor's or master's degree and demonstrate the ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively.
Your contributions will be vital in helping Pairwise reach its ambitious objectives while fostering a culture of innovation and enjoyment in scientific exploration.

We seek an individual who is enthusiastic about horticulture and enjoys cultivating a variety of plants from seed to seed.
This role focuses on plant cultivation in controlled settings, encompassing responsibilities such as plant growth management, data collection, documentation of findings, and communication of results with internal teams.
The successful candidate will exhibit a strong desire to learn new skills and provide support across various projects as needed.
Attention to detail, adaptability, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial for success in this position.

Key Responsibilities:

Experience in growing corn within a greenhouse environment is essential.
Experience with growth chambers and embryo extraction is advantageous.

  • Manage the planting, maintenance, and harvesting of plant inventory for various projects, including:
    • Seed preparation, priming, and sowing.
    • Transplanting plantlets, sampling, acclimating, and tracking.
    • Handling plants, watering, growing, scouting, pollination, and harvesting.
    • Ensuring workspace cleanliness.
  • Maintain meticulous attention to detail and traceability of plant inventory throughout the growth cycle.
  • Document pipeline advancement decisions, actively communicate plant status to internal stakeholders, and record data and decisions in the appropriate systems.
  • Collaborate with multifunctional teams on diverse crops to uncover new insights and propose process improvements.
  • Adhere to instructions from team members and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to deliver high-quality outcomes.
    Draft new SOPs or enhance existing ones based on fresh insights.
  • Develop skill sets and learn new techniques and methodologies.
  • Organize and manage workload to fulfill daily tasks (individually and/or as part of a team).

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant field such as horticulture, plant science, agronomy, biology, botany, ecology, or any biological discipline that necessitates plant husbandry skills.
  • Prior experience in greenhouse operations, including familiarity with greenhouse control systems, fertigation systems, and pest management.
    Demonstrated horticultural skills in a professional or research environment are required.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate scientific records through laboratory information management systems (LIMs) and laboratory notebooks.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety or greenhouse safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safety data sheets (SDSs), and proper laboratory waste handling and disposal.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a large research framework.
  • Capability to independently manage individual experiments.
