The Research Scientist in Crop Trait Innovation will play a pivotal role in leading well-resourced, cross-functional initiatives that generate value for Pairwise and our partners.
This position requires extensive expertise in molecular genetics and project leadership skills.
As a cross-functional leader, you will be crucial in delivering high-impact projects and have the opportunity to spearhead innovative crop trait development initiatives while collaborating with our technology development team to create novel gene editing tools.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaboration and Project Leadership:
    • Identify target genes for trait development and design gene editing-derived alleles.
    • Assess the feasibility of proposed nominations from collaborators.
    • Participate in collaboration science meetings to discuss and refine trait-focused gene editing nominations, providing context for project hand-offs and sharing phenotypic evaluation results.
    • Facilitate communication, documentation, and alignment across project teams.
    • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of Pairwise data systems for effective project leadership and editing tracking.
    • Exhibit strong project management capabilities through efficient leadership, utilizing Pairwise's project management tools and procedures.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Director of Row Crop Trait Discovery to ensure accurate project concept definitions and execute them within budget constraints, enhancing research directions as needed.
  • Apply scientific expertise in an industrial context, including experimental design and data interpretation.
  • Communicate complex technical results clearly and concisely to inform scientific strategy.
  • Work independently while proactively seeking feedback to align on project goals.
  • Implement strategies and activities necessary to complete critical projects within the Trait Discovery function.
  • Demonstrate a proven track record in R&D, showcasing expertise in trait biology and editing design.
  • Develop familiarity with target crop agronomy and cropping systems, coaching relevant stakeholders to facilitate project execution.

Required Qualifications:

  • A PhD in plant developmental genetics, molecular genetics, plant biology, molecular biology, plant physiology, or a related field is essential.
  • In-depth knowledge of plant development and molecular genetics is required.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and collaborate effectively in a cross-functional environment.
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret complex data and communicate findings effectively.
  • Experience in leading projects and mentoring junior scientists.
  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills are necessary.
  • Industry experience is preferred.
