Job Title: Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering

Job Summary:

The University of Vermont is seeking an accomplished scholar to serve as the next Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The successful candidate will be an insightful and decisive manager of people and resources, an effective communicator with strong relationship building skills who can foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain an active research agenda, securing external funding, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Teach and advise in the department's undergraduate and graduate programs.
  • Fulfill Department Chair responsibilities in the shared governance tradition of UVM, including providing leadership and vision, setting department priorities and initiatives, overseeing the department budget, developing recruitment plans, overseeing reappointment, promotion, and tenure processes, supporting, retaining, and mentoring faculty and staff, conducting yearly evaluation of faculty, maintaining and developing relationships with donors, and strategic planning for the future of academic programs and research in the department and college.
  • Lead departmental efforts to promote diversity and inclusive excellence through Our Common Ground Values.
Requirements:
  • Hold a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering or in a closely related field.
  • Have developed a competitively funded, high-impact research program.
  • Have a successful record in teaching mechanical engineering at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Have provided research mentorship and academic advising for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Have a strong record in professional contributions and service.
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead a department's diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts through prior professional accomplishment.
  • Have administrative leadership experience or training as well as the ability to think critically, make informed decisions about complex situations, manage resources and people, cultivate relationships, and foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
