Position Overview

The Clinical Nurse Specialist is an integral member of a collaborative team of licensed and unlicensed caregivers dedicated to delivering personalized, high-quality, and safe patient care. This role operates within a clinical setting overseen by Nurse Supervisors and Office Managers, supported by the WellStar Clinical Champion Forum. The practice framework is guided by the WellStar Professional Practice Model, 5-Star Nursing, and evidence-based practices and research. Competencies for Clinical Nurses are derived from these models and reinforced by the WellStar Core Competencies.

All Clinical Nurses are expected to be licensed, knowledgeable, and adhere to the nursing practice standards as outlined by the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act, implementing the Scope of Practice and Code of Ethics established by the American Nurses Association. As a vital member of the patient services team, the individual is expected to advocate for the patient’s voice while adhering to system policies and procedures and supporting service excellence goals.

  • Executes the Nursing Process (assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation) in clinical care delivery, utilizing evidence-based practices, analytical and critical thinking to ensure individualized care; coordinates care through effective partnerships, recognizing that compassionate care is essential for optimal patient outcomes.
  • Provides relationship-centered, patient-focused care that aligns with specific population characteristics (e.g., age, gender, medical conditions) while adapting service delivery to reflect an understanding of cultural diversity.
  • Consistently collaborates with patients and significant others (as appropriate) using suitable methods for communication (e.g., bedside shift report, interdisciplinary rounds, timely patient education) to keep them informed and ensure that patient goals are central to the care plan.

  • Coordinates the delivery and documentation of safe, quality patient care that supports the professional care delivery model, including diverse and inclusive interdisciplinary communication methods (interdisciplinary rounds, case reviews, etc.); ensures timely documentation and fosters a respectful, inclusive clinical environment.
  • Demonstrates teamwork and collaboration by practicing in a fiscally responsible manner and promoting the recruitment and retention of all healthcare team members.
  • Engages in performance improvement initiatives that include all stakeholders, research, and research utilization to enhance safe, quality patient care, initiating and/or leading such activities while actively participating in the Clinical Champion Forum at the Medical Group level.
  • Professional Development and Initiative
  • Completes all initial and ongoing professional competency assessments, mandatory education, and population-specific training.
  • Acts as a preceptor and/or mentor for other professional nurses (and staff or students from all disciplines) to ensure a qualified workforce for the future, modeling professional nursing practices and fostering a healthy work environment.
  • Evidence-Based Practice and Research
  • Advocates for evidence-based practices, nursing research, and performance improvement within nursing. Participates in activities such as value analysis as part of the decision-making process for evaluating patient care products.
  • Adheres to all healthcare system/organizational policies and procedures and clinical competencies outlined in this job description and professional associations, including legal, regulatory, and accreditation requirements and standards, ensuring compliance with goals such as TJC Patient Safety Goals and Wellstar Health Systems safety absolutes.
  • Engages in data collection, poses relevant clinical questions to advance evidence-based practice, consults with appropriate experts, and utilizes suitable resources and evidence to address practice inquiries.
  • Resources and Support
  • Proactively plans for patient care across the continuum while delivering direct patient care.
  • Contributes to the development of protocols and procedures when called upon or through self-initiation in collaboration with care managers and other healthcare team members to achieve optimal practice outcomes (e.g., reducing re-admission rates, avoidable days, adverse events).
  • Supports the efficient and effective use of human and material resources.

Required Minimum Education

Graduate of an accredited/approved nursing school is required, and

Baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution is preferred.

National Certification in Area of Specialty Preferred

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):

  • Registered Nurse (Single State) or RN - Multi-state Compact
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - Instructor

Additional License(s) and Certification(s)

Current/active license as a registered nurse in the State of Georgia is required.

Must possess a current BLS card from the American Heart Association prior to hire date. Required

ACLS/PALS may be required in certain practice areas.

Required Minimum Experience

Experience in direct patient care is preferred.

Required Minimum Skills

Additional specialty experience may be necessary.

Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently, optimize technology use to support clinical care, and possess basic computer skills;

Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills along with customer service abilities are essential;

Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and respond to emergencies in a decisive, composed, and respectful manner;

Possess excellent time management skills, employing evidence and analytical skills while demonstrating strong critical thinking abilities.
