Job Information

This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity to join the State of Tennessee as a DCS Intake Specialist. As a key member of the Child Abuse Hotline team, you will be responsible for conducting investigatory intakes of alleged child abuse and neglect, assessing child safety and risk, and determining next steps to address child safety and risk concerns.

Responsibilities

  1. Receive and assess referrals of alleged child abuse and neglect from various sources, including the general public and community partners.
  2. Conduct phone interviews with callers, utilizing active listening skills and customer-focused communication to gather information and assess child safety and risk.
  3. Document findings in a written initial child abuse and neglect intake report, ensuring accurate and thorough documentation.
  4. Utilize the DCS electronic intake database to capture and manage information, and conduct searches for prior DCS involvement with the child/family.
  5. Multitask to manage phone call referrals and process non-phone call referrals received from online, fax, mail, or email.
  6. Review DCS screening tools to assess child safety and risk of harm for each intake, and make screening decisions based on DCS policy and procedure.
  7. Alert afterhours on-call local DCS field staff to high-priority/emergency referrals that require immediate response.
  8. May mentor or provide job shadowing opportunities to new Intake Associates, and provide peer consultation and support as requested.
  9. Successfully complete and pass the Child Abuse Hotline Pre-Service Training program, and attend any designated mandatory meetings.
  10. Participate in designated mandatory overtime shifts, including weekend shifts, holiday shifts, and on-call shifts, to ensure appropriate staff coverage for the 24/7/365 Child Abuse Hotline.

Requirements

  1. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in Social Work, Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, or related field of study.
  2. Experience equivalent to one year of full-time professional work providing child welfare services, including social, psychological, or correctional counseling or case management, volunteer services coordination for a children's service program, and/or juvenile classification coordination.
  3. OR Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in Social Work, Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, or related field of study.
  4. Ability to work in a high-stress situation and remain customer-focused, flexible, and culturally sensitive.
  5. Skilled in troubleshooting, problem-solving, and written/verbal communications.
  6. Knowledge of law and government, English language, and computer programs.
  7. Ability to demonstrate active learning and listening, critical thinking, and reading comprehension skills.
  8. Competency in time management, decision quality, and conflict management.

Working Conditions

This is a non-cash overtime position, with any overtime worked paid as comp leave. This position is designated as a work-from-home opportunity, and applicants must reside in Tennessee.
