General Overview

The Patient Access Technician plays a crucial role in the revenue cycle by ensuring precise data collection, documentation, and retrieval using computerized systems. This position reports directly to the leadership of the department.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conducts insurance verification for active policies and confirms benefits or authorization requirements.
  • Reviews and rectifies registration discrepancies.
  • Communicates authorization requirements to relevant staff to guarantee proper service authorization.
  • Collaborates with various departments to facilitate patient access-related information.
  • Performs pre-registration and insurance verification for services provided.
  • Provides coverage at assigned registration locations as needed, including those outside of the primary work area.
  • Functions as a Patient Account Technician I when necessary.
  • Completes additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications: None required.

Education and Experience: A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is required. Preferred experience includes three to five years in a related field.

At least twelve months of experience in medical billing and follow-up within a hospital patient account department, physician office, or medical services organization is essential. Familiarity with ICD-9/CPT coding, third-party payer insurance verification processes, and medical terminology is required.

Skills: Strong interpersonal skills are necessary for effective communication and information exchange, both orally and in writing, with proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Proficiency in computer keyboarding skills is essential. The ability to relate well with the public is crucial.

Working Conditions

This role typically operates in a standard office environment with minimal exposure to excessive noise, dust, or extreme temperatures. However, there may be frequent exposure to communicable diseases and moderately adverse working conditions due to specific patient care activities.
