Job Overview

NREL's Urban Energy Systems Research group is seeking a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in energy modeling and analysis related to both new and existing buildings, as well as district thermal energy systems. The successful candidate will work collaboratively on projects aimed at evaluating the efficiency of current and innovative HVAC systems and advanced district thermal energy solutions, including water-source heat pumps and various environmental heat sources.

The ideal candidate will possess a solid foundation in thermodynamics and heat transfer principles, applying these concepts to building and district HVAC systems.

Key Responsibilities
Under the guidance of senior researchers, the postdoctoral researcher will:
  • Utilize established energy modeling techniques for building and district applications.
  • Create new energy models as necessary to evaluate HVAC system performance.
  • Analyze energy modeling outcomes in relation to existing data and propose implementation strategies.
  • Contribute to scholarly publications in relevant conferences and journals.
Essential Qualifications
Recent PhD graduate within the last three years.

Additional Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in a relevant field such as heat transfer, thermodynamics, or mass transfer, with a focus on modeling research applicable to HVAC systems. Candidates with backgrounds in architectural engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, civil engineering, or related disciplines are encouraged to apply.

Demonstrated expertise in:
  • Fundamentals of heat and mass transfer and thermodynamics.
  • HVAC system principles.
  • Energy modeling for buildings or districts.
  • Programming skills in Matlab, Engineering Equation Solver (EES), EnergyPlus, Python, or similar software.
Strong communication skills (both oral and written) and the ability to work independently are essential.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience modeling district HVAC systems using Modelica.
  • Proficiency in building energy modeling with EnergyPlus/OpenStudio.
  • Experience analyzing existing buildings using meter data and energy audit findings.
  • Knowledge of emerging heat-pump-based HVAC systems and practical implementation recommendations.
  • Familiarity with high-temperature hydronic systems and retrofit recommendations for water-source heat pumps.
  • Understanding of building load reduction strategies and their applications.
  • Interest in integrating diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in research and technology development.

Salary Information
Job Profile: Postdoctoral Researcher / Salary Range: $73,200 - $120,800

NREL considers various factors when determining salary levels, including education, experience, and internal pay alignment.
