Job Overview
This role involves conducting geoscientific, geospatial, technological, and techno-economic evaluations, focusing on geothermal energy systems and infrastructure. The work will support research and development initiatives and provide decision-making assistance within the NREL geothermal program, utilizing methodologies such as geological, geophysical, and geochemical data processing and modeling, geothermal resource evaluation, and subsurface/reservoir characterization.
The researcher will engage in various projects aimed at designing and assessing the performance and viability of geothermal systems, applicable for heating, cooling, and electricity generation. Responsibilities include modeling subsurface heat transfer, surface plant operations, and the overall economic aspects of the systems. The subsurface systems under consideration encompass hydrothermal, enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), deep closed-loop systems, and shallow borehole fields.
The researcher will likely employ various NREL software tools, including dGeo, GEOPHIRES, SAM, SBT, and GHEDesigner, along with third-party open-source and commercial software (e.g., TOUGH family of codes, ResFrac, etc.) for geothermal system modeling. Some projects may necessitate Python programming to implement updates to these tools. The researcher will document findings in publications (including peer-reviewed journals) and present results at geothermal conferences.
This individual will collaborate with senior staff to conceive and propose innovative research concepts and projects related to geothermal energy, while also developing collaborative relationships both internally and externally.
The position requires thorough documentation for internal communication and external publication, including writing and publishing analysis results in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at national and international forums. The successful candidate will represent NREL's research and analysis at technical, business, and stakeholder events.
Essential Qualifications
Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.
* Must fulfill educational requirements prior to employment commencement.
Additional Required Qualifications
The successful candidate must demonstrate experience in the following areas:
- Geophysics/geology/rock physics
- Resource exploration and characterization; exploration methods and drilling
- Geophysical theory, methods, data processing, and/or inversion
- ArcGIS or other GIS software
- Data analytics using spreadsheets, data visualization, etc. to analyze data and draw conclusions.
- Subsurface data processing, modeling, and interpretation.
- 3D geological modeling environments, such as Leapfrog
- Thermal-hydraulic-mechanical-chemical (THMC) reservoir modeling, or subsets thereof, using simulators such as CMG STARS, FALCON, Volsung, GOHFER, Resfrac, TOUGH family of codes, OpenGeoSys.
- General data processing and analysis software, such as Python or MATLAB.
- Effective and concise communication both in writing and speaking; to disseminate research results through technical talks and publications, as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Compensation and Benefits
The anticipated annual salary range for this position is $73,200 - $120,800, based on full-time 40 hours per week.
NREL considers a candidate's education, training, experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market, and internal value when determining salary levels for potential new employees.
