Hawthorne, California, United States SpaceX Full time

At SpaceX, we believe in a future where humanity explores the cosmos, and we are committed to developing the technologies that will make this vision a reality. Our mission is to enable human life on Mars.

MECHANICAL ENGINEER, SUPPLY CHAIN (FALCON & DRAGON)

SpaceX is redefining the standards of supply chain management. We seek suppliers who can deliver exceptional quality alongside rapidly changing designs and increasing production volumes. We are looking for candidates with extensive expertise in manufacturing and quality assurance, coupled with a relentless drive to empower our suppliers. This role is crucial for our Dragon and Falcon programs and requires a blend of strong leadership and technical skills.

This position is highly technical, necessitating hands-on experience in process engineering and the development of new products through to stable production of machined components and assemblies utilized in rockets and rocket engines. The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive understanding of the machining and assembly of metallic components, with a willingness to tackle new challenges in unfamiliar territories to support our mission to Mars.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as the technical liaison for assigned components, addressing urgent challenges at suppliers and minimizing risks to production by resolving significant manufacturing and quality issues.
  • Investigate problems related to assigned components, identify root causes, implement corrective actions at the supplier or SpaceX, and seek alternative suppliers when necessary.
  • Generate and manage issue tickets as required, collaborating with engineering teams to execute necessary rework, repairs, or dispositions.
  • Develop a deep understanding of your assigned components and the processes involved in their assembly, becoming the primary contact for supply chain-related defects.
  • Collaborate with procurement to identify outstanding suppliers and assess their capabilities for quality and adherence to our stringent timelines.
  • Conduct design for manufacturability (DFM) assessments to ensure components can be produced efficiently at early stages, ideally before sourcing.
  • Oversee the new product introduction (NPI) process at suppliers for new components, drawing modifications, or when transitioning existing components to new suppliers.
  • Lead the production part approval process (PPAP) to ensure reliable supply, reduce inspection requirements, and enhance overall delivery efficiency.
  • Exhibit innovation, technical proficiency, meticulous attention to detail, self-motivation, and courage.
  • Drive results and enhance customer satisfaction by collaborating with teams, leading initiatives, and continuously improving the supply chain.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline.
  • 1+ years of experience in manufacturing and/or inspection of mechanical products in a production setting (including academic projects, clubs, or internships).

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master's degree in engineering.
  • Experience with machining and related operations such as milling, turning, and tube cutting of various materials.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and models; familiarity with GD&T.
  • General knowledge of valves, motors, mechanisms, interconnects, solenoids, potentiometers, life support, and thermal control systems is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with TIG, MIG, and orbital tube welding of stainless and carbon steels is a plus.
  • Understanding of supplier quality processes (PPAP, APQP, first article inspection reports, etc.).
  • Knowledge of statistical methods and techniques, including design of experiments, Lean, and Six Sigma.
  • Experience with quality management systems (ISO 9000/TS/AS9100/NADCAP) and MRP/ERP systems.
  • Disciplined problem-solving approach - 8D methodology.
  • Proficient in MS Office, Excel, and report writing.
  • Familiarity with SQL and PowerBI.
  • Experience in sharing information and influencing stakeholders across organizational boundaries.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willingness to travel - up to 60-85% travel may be required, including international travel.
  • Ability to work extended hours and/or weekends as necessary to achieve significant milestones.
  • This position requires onsite presence.
  • A valid driver's license is mandatory.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay Range:
Supply Chain Engineer/Level I: $95,000.00 - $115,000.00 per year
Supply Chain Engineer/Level II: $110,000.00 - $130,000.00 per year

Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is just one component of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also qualify for long-term incentives, such as company stock, stock options, or cash awards, as well as potential discretionary bonuses and the opportunity to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, access to a 401(k) retirement plan, short & long-term disability insurance, life insurance, paid parental leave, and various other discounts and perks are also included. You may accrue 3 weeks of paid vacation and will be eligible for 10 or more paid holidays annually. Exempt employees are entitled to 5 days of sick leave per year.

ITAR REQUIREMENTS:

  • To comply with U.S. Government export regulations, applicants must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees, or asylees, or be eligible to obtain the necessary authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
