Role Overview
Northern Trust Asset Management (NTAM) is a leading investment management firm, managing assets exceeding a trillion dollars. We are entrusted by investors worldwide to help them navigate the complexities of the financial markets, enabling them to achieve their long-term goals with confidence.

The Head of Strategic Initiatives will play a pivotal role in steering strategic planning, spearheading key initiatives, and exploring potential strategic alliances and M&A opportunities. This individual will assess threats and opportunities that may impact our long-term growth trajectory, crafting comprehensive business cases and strategic alternatives. Utilizing industry insights, competitive analysis, internal capabilities, and financial modeling, they will develop analytical frameworks and executive presentations to shape our strategic priorities.

In collaboration with various business lines and functions, the Head of Strategic Initiatives will guide strategic and tactical planning, identify cross-functional initiatives, and support the alignment of functional strategies.

This role will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Asset Management, contributing to critical projects that align with the strategic agenda of the Asset Management Leadership team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with leadership to establish key strategic priorities and provide insightful partnership to Senior Executives and business stakeholders on various critical matters.
  • Drive and facilitate the transformation agenda within the business. Oversee essential research projects, analyzing market trends and potential competitor actions across all business dimensions, and recommend strategic responses. Support the development of data-driven and digital initiatives across the global business unit.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of competitors' market positions, strengths, and weaknesses, and assess how NTAM may be influenced by market dynamics and competitive strategies.
  • Segment markets and clientele to enable a detailed understanding of key markets and tactical responses by the business based on market intelligence.
  • Conduct industry research to uncover opportunities within existing business lines, new geographic markets, or product verticals, including market and competitive assessments, organizational fit, financial implications, and entry strategies.
  • Work closely with business unit leaders to articulate detailed strategic plans with specific objectives, deliverables, and measurable outcomes for each business line.
  • Engage with Sales, Marketing, Product, Finance, Operations, Legal, and other business functions to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of initiatives, providing analytical insights and problem-solving support to cross-functional partners at all levels.
  • Produce client- and executive-ready materials, including agendas, memos, and presentations, with clearly defined messages and narratives supported by market research and data analysis.
  • Assess the strategic alignment of potential M&A targets, including market, customer, competitive, and synergy evaluations; maintain ongoing communication with investment banking partners.
  • Lead strategic initiatives and support the formulation of long-term growth strategies and profitability objectives.
Essential Qualifications
  • 5-10 years of professional experience, including 3-5 years in top-tier strategy consulting or corporate strategy and development.
  • MBA preferred, with a strong background in financial services and asset management.
  • Proven leadership skills and the ability to influence senior executives while challenging existing paradigms.
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity and thriving in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical capabilities and a passion for developing innovative, data-driven solutions.
  • Excellent time management, project planning, and organizational skills.
  • Strong relationship-building and collaboration skills; a proven team player with experience leading cross-departmental initiatives.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with a demonstrated ability to create impactful materials and effectively present to executive audiences.
  • Experience in team management and collaboration with multiple business functions.
  • A global perspective with an understanding of social and cultural nuances.
  • Advanced proficiency in PowerPoint and Excel, including modeling and data manipulation.
Compensation:
Salary Range: $137,400 - $188,900

This salary range represents an estimate of base pay. Northern Trust offers a comprehensive benefits package, including retirement and pension contributions, health and welfare benefits, paid time off, parental and caregiver leave, life insurance, and additional wellbeing benefits.
