Job Summary

The National Institute on Aging is seeking a visionary leader to serve as Director of its extramural Division of Aging Biology. The position is in the Office of the Director, National Institute on Aging, located in Bethesda, MD, and reports directly to the NIA Director.

A deeper understanding of the aging process is crucial for identifying new preventive and therapeutic strategies to improve human lifespan and reduce the burden of age-related chronic diseases. The Division of Aging Biology plays a pivotal role in achieving this goal by providing funding support to academic institutions across the United States through grants and programs to enable research on the basic biology of aging.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in research on the biology of aging or related disciplines, with experience in collaborative research and a history of publications that reflect their expertise. They will also have demonstrated administrative skills in supervising scientific and administrative staff, overseeing complex research programs, and collaborating with the aging research community.

The Division Director will serve as the scientific and administrative leader of the Division of Aging Biology, providing strategic vision and expertise for the division's portfolio. They will oversee all administrative operations, including scientific planning, operational administration, grant management, budget management, and collaboration with NIA senior leadership.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate must have an M.D. and/or Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a relevant discipline and have extensive training and experience in research on the biology of aging or related disciplines. They must also have demonstrated administrative skills, leadership experience, and a commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

Benefits

This position will be filled under a Title 42 excepted service appointment. Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with the experience of the candidate. A recruitment or relocation bonus may be available, and relocation expenses may be paid. A full package of federal Civil Service benefits is available, including retirement, health and life insurance, long-term care insurance, leave, and a Thrift Savings Plan (401K equivalent).
