Bethesda, Maryland, United States Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine Full time
Join the HJF Team
The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization committed to enhancing military medicine. We collaborate with military, medical, academic, and governmental entities to manage and support leading scientific initiatives that benefit both armed forces members and civilians. Established in 1983, HJF has played a crucial role in connecting the military medical community with federal and private partners. Our support and administrative expertise enable military medical researchers and clinicians to focus on their scientific endeavors and achieve their research objectives.

HJF is currently seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow who will be responsible for initiating and executing research projects in partnership with a dedicated research team. This role involves pursuing research along a specific line of inquiry and developing manuscripts for publication. The position is aligned with the Department of Biochemistry under the guidance of Dr. Philip Jordan. The incumbent will conduct research and/or development alongside other scientific and technical personnel, exercising technical discretion in the design, execution, and interpretation of experiments that contribute to project strategies. Limited analysis and interpretation of results will also be part of the responsibilities.

We are looking for a focused and motivated scientist who has completed their PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Cancer Biology, or related fields and is eager to further their training as a research associate. Our lab is funded by the NIH (NICHD and NIGMS) to explore two major initiatives: 1) Assessing the processes necessary for genome maintenance (including DNA repair, recombination, and chromosome segregation) during mitosis and meiosis, and 2) Modeling human gonad development using organoid culture to better understand human reproductive development and disease.

The ideal candidate will possess experience with mouse models and/or mammalian cell culture, particularly human embryonic/pluripotent stem cell culture. Familiarity with techniques such as fluorescence microscopy (live cell imaging and/or immunofluorescence microscopy), immuno-histology, molecular biology (DNA cloning, RT-PCR, and protein expression/purification, CRISPR/Cas9 genomic engineering), co-immunoprecipitation, gene targeting/transgenic techniques, and biochemical assays (including ELISA, colorimetric, fluorometric, and luminescent assays) will be advantageous. Experience with single-cell analyses such as RNA-seq, ATACseq, ChIPseq, etc., is also relevant to our research goals.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in the design, development, execution, and implementation of scientific research and/or development.
  • Investigate the feasibility of applying a diverse range of scientific principles and theories to potential inventions and products.
  • Conduct specialized laboratory research utilizing experimental protocols that involve specific procedures.
  • Collect and manage samples while maintaining detailed records of experiments.
  • Assist in preparing data for presentations at scientific meetings and for publication in academic journals.
  • May perform additional duties as assigned or directed by the supervisor, including participation in required training for the role.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of the relevant scientific area; ability to analyze and interpret data.
  • Proficient in communicating research findings in manuscript and presentation formats (posters and talks).
  • Experience with mouse models and/or mammalian cell culture, particularly human embryonic/pluripotent stem cell culture.
  • Experience with single-cell analyses such as RNA-seq, ATACseq, ChIPseq, etc.
Work Environment
  • This position will primarily take place in a laboratory setting.
Education and Experience
  • Doctoral degree required.
  • Minimum of 0-5 years of relevant experience.
Note: Employment with HJF is contingent upon successful completion of a background check. Equal Opportunity Employer/Protected Veterans/Individuals with Disabilities.
