GENERAL FUNCTION:

This role is pivotal in overseeing the underwriting process, ensuring uniformity in procedures, processes, and credit documentation. The incumbent will have the authority to approve or decline the most intricate and substantial loans within designated limits. They will also provide guidance to credit and loan personnel regarding the bank's credit policies and SBA Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). Ensuring compliance with credit policies and maintaining underwriting consistency within the assigned Credit Team is essential. This position directly supervises SBA Lead Underwriters, Team Leads, and Portfolio Managers, while also offering credit policy and SBA SOP support to the Processing Specialist team. The role includes delivering insights on credit risk trends and updates on credit policies to Senior Credit Officers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Identify reporting requirements in Business Banking Fulfillment and propose solutions to enhance efficiency and accuracy in task completion.

- Make decisions on complex loan requests up to the approved credit authority.

- Advise credit, SBA eligibility, and Middle Office teams on the overall credit and risk policies, highlighting significant trends and suggesting policy modifications when necessary.

- Oversee underwriting procedures for departmental loan requests to ensure consistent adherence to Bancorp policies and standards.

- Provide necessary overages for the ongoing management of credit exposure as applicable.

- Review various reports (borrowing base certificates, past due accounts, overdrafts, Portfolio Reviews, etc.) regularly to assess credit quality and performance.

- Evaluate credit structures and loan proposals for new SBA requests from existing and potential Business Banking/Retail/Middle Market clients.

- Offer feedback to senior management, Risk Management, and Line of Business Managers to ensure uniform application of Bancorp lending standards.

- Responsible for portfolio risk rating and ensuring accuracy in credit administration for the Bancorp SBA portfolio.

- Manage nonaccrual and credit loss projections for the Bancorp SBA portfolio.

- Review periodic Bancorp credit quality reports to evaluate compliance with Bancorp goals and objectives.

- Attend and represent SBA National at various meetings, including administrative loan meetings and portfolio review sessions.

- Develop training and educational guidelines for SBA lending.

- Ensure adherence to SBA credit and eligibility policies, maintaining compliance with government regulations and the SBA guaranty.

- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of all SBA products and services, ensuring that the Business Banking leadership team and market leaders are informed of new developments or modifications to the SBA program as published by the SBA Center Office.

- Recommend credits for assignment to the Special Assets Group when appropriate.

- Act as a liaison for affiliates regarding Bancorp or other Credit departmental issues.

- Serve as a conduit for information to senior management as needed.

- Represent Bancorp in high-level customer interactions and community affairs.

- Provide ongoing management and coaching for a team of Credit professionals, including junior Credit Officers, Underwriter Team Leads, SBA Underwriters, and SBA Portfolio Managers.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for recruiting, hiring, supervising, and coaching junior Credit Officers, Underwriter Team Leads, and SBA Portfolio Managers. This includes performance management, compliance, and ensuring underwriting consistency with company policies and guidelines, as well as administering corrective counseling and compensation for the assigned team.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

- Bachelor's degree or equivalent related experience required; Master's degree preferred.

- A minimum of 10 years of relevant credit experience is required.

- Knowledge of bankruptcy law and related legal proceedings is essential.

- Thorough understanding of SBA SOP and other SOP program guides is necessary.

- Strong influencing and negotiation skills are required.

- Ability to assess, analyze, and recommend the best course of action in challenging credit situations.

- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills are essential.

- Direct lending and management experience is preferred.

- Proficiency in basic spreadsheet applications such as Excel and Word is required.

- Demonstrated ability to learn and understand various computer systems is necessary.

- Strong communication, organizational, and follow-up skills are essential.

- Excellent relationship-building skills are required.
