Environmental Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled Environmental Scientist III to join our team at Ahtna. This is a dynamic and challenging role that requires a strong background in environmental science, biology, hydrology, chemistry, or a related field.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct contaminated site characterization, monitoring, and remediation field assessments safely and in accordance with work plans.
- Travel to perform fieldwork, site visits, or meetings, including use of aircraft, motor vehicles, ATVs, and watercraft.
- Field screening and sampling for contaminants and environmental parameters in various media, following standard operating procedures, guidance, and regulations.
- Document field operations, including personnel, equipment, weather, and environmental data, using photography, handwritten fieldnotes, and tablets.
- Communicate with project managers using phones, email, and daily reports.
- Examine and inspect work progress, equipment, and job sites to verify safety and ensure project specifications are met.
- Schedule and oversee subcontractors.
- Adhere to schedule and financial objectives as specified by project managers.
- Assist or lead the preparation of proposals, planning documents, and reports.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
- Provide client assistance to program and project managers, adhering to scope, schedule, and budget on projects.
- Maintain 2 areas of technical expertise.
- Lead teams performing project tasks, both in the office and field locations.
- Lead technical project execution and document preparation, peer review project documents.
- Assist with task order and project bid proposals.
- Project staffing and technical mentoring.
- Manage smaller projects involving site characterization, long-term monitoring, and similar tasks.
- 20% - 40% of the time may be spent conducting fieldwork, potentially in remote locations.
- Bachelor's Degree in Physical/Environmental Sciences or a similarly related field.
- Valid Driver's License with a clean driving record, able to drive a company vehicle.
- Proficient computer skills using Microsoft Office Suite and databases such as Access.
- Adept at explaining technical aspects of fieldwork to internal and external clients verbally and in writing.
- Proficiency in other programs such as Microsoft Project, AutoCAD, GIS, databases, and environmental modeling programs.
- ADEC-qualified environmental professional.
- Current 40-Hour HAZWOPER.
- 8-Hour HAZWOPER Refresher.
- Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) certification.
- CPR/1st Aid/AED Certified.
- Experience working on projects with Federal clients.
- Knowledge and experience with Alaska Native cultures.
- Technical Writing - Ability to prepare technical communications, plans, and reports with minimal editing and corrections.
- Self-Motivated - Ability to be internally inspired to perform a task to the best of one's ability using his or her drive or initiative.
- Communication - Ability to communicate effectively with others using the spoken word. Ability to communicate in writing clearly and concisely.
- Time Management - Ability to utilize the available time to organize and complete work within given deadlines.
- Goal Oriented - Ability to focus on a goal and obtain a pre-determined result.
- Accuracy - Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly.
- Confidentiality - Ability to preserve confidential information.
- May be indoors or outdoors, subject to confined spaces, changes in temperature, weather conditions, and noise levels.
- Frequent lifting, sitting, standing, stooping for prolonged periods, using hands/fingers requiring dexterity, should have good hand-eye coordination and motion control in coordination with handling tools, equipment, and other related components.
- Reaching with hands and arms for items above and below sight level, talking, hearing, and seeing (up close, at a distance, along the periphery, with depth, color perception, and the ability to adjust focus); walking from place to place within the project location with occasional use of stairs and no elevator available; bending, pushing, pulling, and standing for up to 12 hours.
- Frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds such as small electrical components, equipment, and other materials.
