Position Purpose

Under general supervision, this role builds upon the responsibilities of Underwriter I and II, fostering deeper connections with producers, reinsurers, and stakeholders. This position entails greater ownership and accountability in evaluating intricate profit sources through the selection of suitable risks, while also driving increased submission volumes.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assess, evaluate, accept, decline, rate, quote, and finalize new or renewal submissions with significant premium or risk exposure.
  • Establish and nurture robust relationships with agents, reinsurers, and stakeholders.
  • Examine complex submissions, account losses, pricing structures, and profitable premiums.
  • Analyze intricate profit sources by selecting appropriate risks.
  • Support special projects or additional tasks as required.
Education & Experience
  • A bachelor's degree in insurance, finance, risk management, business, or a related discipline is typically required.
  • A minimum of 5+ years of relevant experience is necessary for consideration.

  • Proficient in utilizing analytical techniques in underwriting processes to identify viable solutions.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to convey findings and recommendations to both internal and external stakeholders regarding underwriting matters.
  • Skilled in employing software to summarize and analyze extensive data sets.
  • Comprehends, applies, and accurately documents the nature of operations for assigned risks and communicates findings effectively.
  • Capable of preparing, reviewing, and conducting underwriting analyses of accounts.
  • Possesses analytical skills and a thorough understanding of submission requirements, model entry, and product appetite.
  • Engages in ongoing education related to underwriting.
  • Demonstrates the ability to generate innovative solutions within the underwriting department.
  • Typically has obtained a letter of authority.
  • Possesses a solid understanding of the markets and clients being served.
  • Holds some authority to process approvals, issuances, or changes for policies.
  • Handles more complex risks than Underwriter I and has achieved a higher level of authority.
  • Presents solutions to management on non-standard issues independently.
  • Exhibits knowledge of proper sign-off procedures and sound underwriting judgment in most cases.
  • Maintains a comprehensive understanding of internal processes related to the product and demonstrates knowledge of loss rating and credibility.
  • Works towards building and sustaining a profitable portfolio of business.
