Geoscience Advisor for Natural Hazards

Position Overview
The U.S. Department of the Interior is seeking a qualified individual for the role of Physical Scientist within the Natural Hazards Mission Area. This role is pivotal in providing expert guidance and support regarding geological hazards, particularly in relation to volcanic activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Offer authoritative advice to the U.S. Agency for International Development/Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (USAID/BHA) on international volcanic occurrences and their potential humanitarian implications.
- Lead a team of Geoscience Advisors to oversee and represent USAID/BHA-funded initiatives, including disaster assistance teams for landslides and earthquakes, as well as the Volcano Disaster Assistance Program.
- Deliver independent programming and policy recommendations for geological hazard projects, focusing on volcanic events, and exercise decision-making authority in funding development.
- Provide high-level geological hazard insights to various USAID bureaus and other U.S. government agencies.
- Participate in international crisis response efforts on behalf of BHA and USGS, which may involve evaluating potential hazards and risks to both U.S. and foreign governments.

Essential Requirements:
- Candidates must be U.S. Citizens.
- Must be suitable for Federal employment, as determined by a background investigation.
- The selected candidate may be required to serve a one-year probationary period.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance.

Qualifications
Basic Education Requirement:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria to fulfill the basic education requirement for the Physical Scientist position:
- A completed 4-year degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics, including 24 semester hours in physical science or related engineering fields.
- A combination of education and experience equivalent to the above, totaling 4 years, with at least 24 semester hours in relevant physical science or engineering disciplines.
For GS-14 Level:
In addition to the basic education requirement, candidates must possess one year of professional experience directly related to the position, equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in Federal service. This experience should include leadership in geologic hazard research and effective communication of complex technical principles.
