About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Physician Assistant to join our Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Service at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). As a key member of our team, you will provide exceptional patient care and work collaboratively with our physicians and staff to deliver high-quality services.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct care, counseling, and instructing for the orthopedic foot and ankle patient population.
  • Function independently in own clinic and coordinate all aspects of patient care.
  • Assist supervising physician with overall management of patients, including organization and workflow of clinics.
  • Perform complete histories and physical examinations on new, established, preop, and postop patients.
  • Order, interpret, and evaluate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Develop appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings.
  • Consult with supervising physician regarding abnormal findings outside PA scope of practice.
  • Prescribe medications and narcotics as necessary according to organizational and state/federal regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Initiate consultations and referrals for patients.
  • Acquire preoperative surgical consents and confirm laterality.
  • Perform surgical optimization and education for patients and families.
  • Order vital preop diagnostic tests and labs as indicated.
  • Provide symptom management for foot and ankle patients.
  • Lead high volume of patient calls and complete outpatient clinical forms.
  • Acquire prior authorizations for surgery, scans, medications, or DME when necessary.
  • Provide high-quality and timely documentation of clinic visits.
  • Contribute to patient presentation in clinic and multidisciplinary meetings.
  • Identify patients appropriate for division research studies and acquire consents.
  • Practice cost-effective medicine and improve available resources.
  • Maintain communication with inpatient staff and other multidisciplinary providers.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Perform other responsibilities required by the Foot and Ankle service.
Requirements
  • Graduate level physician assistant program (Master's degree) accredited by the Accreditation and Review Committee for Physician Assistants (ARC-PA).
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) acquired prior to first day of employment.
  • Valid license or eligibility for licensure as a physician assistant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Eligible for and maintain a current DEA registration and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration.
  • Complete 100 hours of CME according to national and state regulations during each two-year period of employment.
  • Qualified in all basic and advanced cardiac life support standards as established by the American Heart Association.
  • 50-patient case load to submit to MGH credentialing for the first assist privilege.
