We are seeking a highly skilled Physician Assistant to join our Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Service at Mass General Hospital. As a key member of our team, you will provide exceptional patient care, work collaboratively with our physicians and staff, and contribute to the advancement of our service.
Responsibilities- Provide direct care, counseling, and education to patients with orthopedic foot and ankle conditions.
- Function independently in the clinic, coordinating all aspects of patient care and assisting supervising physicians with patient management.
- Assist APP colleagues with clinic coverage during vacations, sick leave, or FMLA absences.
- Perform complete histories and physical examinations on new, established, preoperative, and postoperative patients.
- Order, interpret, and evaluate laboratory and diagnostic tests as necessary.
- Develop and implement plans of care and follow-up based on diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings.
- Consult with supervising physicians and other orthopedic foot and ankle surgeons regarding abnormal findings outside the PA's scope of practice.
- Prescribe medications and narcotics as necessary, adhering to organizational and state/federal regulatory policies and procedures.
- Initiate consultations and referrals for patients as needed.
- Acquire preoperative surgical consents and confirm laterality, adhering to hospital consent guidelines.
- Perform surgical optimization and education for patients and families, reinforcing the surgical plan presented by the attending physician.
- Order vital preoperative diagnostic tests, labs, imaging, consultations, and procedures as indicated or requested by the attending physician.
- Provide symptom management for foot and ankle patients, both surgical and nonoperative.
- Lead high volumes of patient calls, messages, and emails, and complete all outpatient clinical forms.
- Acquire prior authorizations for surgery, scans, medications, or DME when peer-to-peer calls are necessary.
- Consistently provide high-quality and timely documentation of clinic visits, admission notes, outpatient progress notes, procedure notes, and email/phone conversations.
- Contribute to patient presentation in clinic, weekly indications conference, and multidisciplinary meetings as necessary.
- Identify patients suitable for division research studies and acquire consents after completing Insight training.
- Practice cost-effective medicine in an efficient manner, improving available resources.
- Maintain communication with inpatient staff, off-site staff, and all involved in patient care transitions.
- Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills to provide quality patient-centered care.
- Demonstrate expert clinical judgment skills to function independently.
- Graduate-level physician assistant program (Masters degree) accredited by the Accreditation and Review Committee for Physician Assistants (ARC-PA) or such other accrediting agency as may qualify a graduate to sit for the NCCPA certifying examination.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) acquired prior to first day of employment.
- Valid license or eligibility for licensure as a physician assistant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
- Eligible for and maintain a current DEA registration and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration.
- Complete 100 hours of CME according to national and state regulations during each two-year period of employment.
- Pass a re-certification exam every ten years or opt for the newer program divided in segments.
- Qualified in all basic and advanced cardiac life support standards as established by the American Heart Association.
- Have a 50-patient case load to submit to MGH credentialing for the first assist privilege.
