This position is fully remote. Candidates must be U.S. Citizens or U.S. Persons residing in the United States for the past three consecutive years and possess the ability to obtain a Public Trust level 5 clearance.

We are seeking a Lead Bioinformatics Specialist to oversee a team of bioinformatics developers, scientists, and trainers in executing impactful molecular epidemiology and surveillance initiatives while educating public health professionals on bioinformatics methodologies and tools.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Project Manager and collaborate with the Infrastructure Team Lead to ensure timely and budget-compliant delivery of high-quality program capabilities.
  • Utilize your expertise to guide the selection and development of tailored bioinformatics methodologies and tools, adapting them for high-performance and cloud computing environments.
  • Serve as the authority on workflow management tools such as Nextflow and other open-source solutions.
  • Create bioinformatics training materials, lead peer reviews of training sessions, and deliver advanced training to CDC scientists.
  • Manage the resolution of bioinformatics helpdesk inquiries and enhance our knowledge base and documentation on the user-facing website.
  • Coordinate with high-performance computing infrastructure and team members to address cross-team issues and represent the bioinformatics perspective in discussions.
  • Maintain project plans and documentation for major activities, track team progress, set goals, and communicate needs to stakeholders.
  • Produce quarterly reports, biweekly progress updates with metrics, and co-author scientific publications with CDC researchers.
  • Mentor team members and interns, identifying opportunities for professional growth and monitoring team performance.
  • Develop collaborations with CDC and external partners, engaging with user groups and the Nextflow community to foster professional relationships and generate new projects.
  • Support project initiation activities, including planning schedules, scopes, and resources.
  • Drive the creation and execution of an innovation roadmap, aligning operations with customer missions.
  • Promote continuous service improvement and innovation.
  • Lead project reviews and briefings, both internally and with customers.
  • Ensure performance aligns with specified contract SLAs and implement necessary adjustments.
  • Collaborate with other contractors to deliver effective solutions for customers.
  • Stay informed about advancements in bioinformatics research and high-performance computing technologies.
  • Establish and maintain regular communication with customers, internal leaders, and other stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Bioinformatics, Genomics, Genetics, or related fields from an accredited institution, along with 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Proven experience in supervising or leading teams and projects.
  • Familiarity with Linux environments and extensive experience with open-source bioinformatics tools.
  • Proficient in programming/scripting languages such as Python, R, Perl, Shell (Bash), or similar.
  • Experience in high-performance computing and/or cloud computing environments.
  • Ability to write custom scripts and software for bioinformatics analysis using Python, Perl, R, and/or Java.
  • Experience with Nextflow (preferred), Snakemake, or similar workflow management systems.
  • Experience in designing and conducting training workshops for the bioinformatics community on the latest methods and concepts.
  • Knowledge of phylogenetic analysis, metagenomics, and genome assembly techniques.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, agile environment with competing priorities.
  • Strong collaboration skills with customers, project managers, and team members to enhance performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting to government officials and coordinating with other contractors and stakeholders.
  • Eligibility to obtain a Public Trust Clearance.

Desired Qualifications:

  • PhD in Bioinformatics, Genomics, Genetics, or related fields.
  • Experience applying machine learning techniques to bioinformatics.
  • Experience in supporting state and/or local public health agencies.
  • Experience working on scientific projects with CDC, FDA, NIH, or other federal agencies.
  • PMP or equivalent project management certification.
  • While this position is 100% remote, a base in Atlanta, GA is preferred.
