Position Overview:

The Inpatient Nutrition Specialist plays a crucial role in delivering compassionate Medical Nutrition Therapy within a hospital setting. This role is integral to a collaborative team, ensuring the provision of evidence-based nutritional care. The specialist will apply the Nutrition Care Process and maintain accurate documentation of patient interactions in the electronic medical record.

Qualifications:

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Dietetics or a related field
  • Completion of an Accredited Dietetic Internship or Coordinated Program recognized by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionist credentialed by the Commission on Dietetic Registration, or registry-eligible, and Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist as per state regulations. Licensure must be obtained within six months of hire if registry-eligible.
  • Preferred: Master's Degree in Dietetics or a related field
  • Preferred: One year of experience as a Registered Dietitian
  • Commitment to maintaining a Professional Development Portfolio and Continuing Education to uphold registration and licensure.

Key Responsibilities:

The Inpatient Nutrition Specialist will effectively manage their daily responsibilities to ensure timely completion of tasks. This position may also involve providing services to external contracts as agreed upon with the Food and Nutrition Services Department. The specialist will participate in rotating weekend and holiday schedules. Daily responsibilities may vary based on patient load, contract needs, meetings, mentoring interns, and other duties as required. In this capacity, the specialist will guide, instruct, and mentor dietetic interns from various educational institutions.

  • Implement the Nutrition Care Process as outlined by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and in accordance with hospital policies for Nutrition Screening, Assessment, and Reassessment of Patients.
  • Deliver nutrition counseling and education tailored to patients and caregivers based on individual learning assessments.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team and engage in patient care rounds as appropriate.
  • Provide supervised learning experiences for dietetic interns and students when suitable.
  • Communicate effectively with Food and Nutrition Services staff to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Engage in Quality Improvement and Cost Control initiatives related to patient care and nutrition services.
  • Develop and disseminate educational materials for the hospital and community to foster a culture that values nutrition services.
  • Support continuity of care by referring patients to appropriate outpatient services when necessary.
  • Participate in departmental, organizational, or community teams and committees as appropriate.
  • Maintain a high level of expertise and professional development concerning nutrition trends, research, policies, certifications, and standards of practice.
  • Utilize independent decision-making and adhere to the Medical Nutrition Therapy Order Implementation policy to execute or adjust nutrition-related orders, ensuring efficient and optimal nutrition care, including tube feeding and total parenteral nutrition when applicable.
  • Integrate nutrition care with other treatment modalities, interpreting biochemical and clinical data, identifying and monitoring patients at nutritional risk, and providing a range of nutritional therapy interventions to address nutritional crises and promote health maintenance.
