Genetic Counselor Assistant

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Genetic Counselor Assistant to join our team at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. As a key member of our Ambulatory Services team, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and support to individuals and families affected by cancer.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct thorough interviews with patients to gather personal and family medical history, and document this information accurately.
- Request and upload outside medical records to our departmental database, ensuring seamless coordination of care.
- Assist with clinic flow, including scheduling, rooming patients, and coordinating joint visits with genetic counselors and physicians.
- Staff the Genetic Testing Station, providing video and hand-out-based education to patients.
- Review research consent forms with patients and send electronic consent forms for signature.
- Accompany patients to the laboratory for blood draws or facilitate the collection of saliva samples for genetic testing.
- Prepare blood or saliva samples for transportation to laboratories within and outside of UCSF.
- Monitor communications with genetic testing laboratories, responding to requests for additional documentation or samples.
- Consult with healthcare providers and laboratories to ensure seamless coordination of care.
- Draw and update patient pedigrees using Progeny pedigree drawing software and patient history forms.
- Enter data into the Cancer Risk Program (CRP) database.
- Perform other patient preparation and follow-up tasks as needed.
- Support clinical research projects, including consenting, data collection, documentation, and other tasks.
- Bachelor's degree in a biological/health science or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of genetics and genetic concepts.
- Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with patients, staff, and healthcare providers.
- Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
- Experience working with patients and families in a community or medical setting.
- Previous experience with clinical projects, either in an administrative or clinical role.
- Knowledge of medical practice terminology and genetic terminology and concepts.
- Experience with Outlook, FileMaker Pro, and Progeny (or other pedigree drawing software).
- Bi-lingual or multi-lingual capability (Spanish, Cantonese, Russian) is strongly preferred.
