Role Summary
The School Counselor is an essential member of the educational leadership team, tasked with delivering comprehensive developmental support across academic, personal/social, artistic, and career domains. This role is pivotal in guiding students to become well-rounded, productive adults. The School Counselor collaborates with students, faculty, families, community organizations, and other stakeholders to enhance student success and address identified needs.
The School Counselor will design and implement a holistic school counseling program that encompasses college readiness, career exploration, and personal growth for all students. Additionally, the counselor will provide guidance and support to students and families regarding their college and career aspirations.
School counselors are trained professionals with a mental health perspective, equipped to address the diverse challenges faced by today’s student population. The School Counselor will work alongside the Student Support Team to proactively develop programs and services that facilitate student achievement.
Key Responsibilities
Development and Management of Counseling Program
- Establish and maintain a strategic plan for effective delivery of the school counseling program, aligned with the Developmental Counseling Model for Illinois Schools and current school data.
- Communicate the objectives of the counseling program to administrators, educators, students, and families.
- Maintain up-to-date resources related to counseling, college, career, and arts for students and families.
- Ensure accountability for the implementation and management of the counseling program.
- Utilize data to create comprehensive programs that address student needs.
- Assist stakeholders in interpreting and understanding student performance data.
- Comply with laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards in the counseling profession.
- Deliver a comprehensive school counseling program in line with established frameworks and expectations.
- Integrate the school's SEL curriculum into lessons for individuals and groups.
- Conduct developmentally appropriate activities to meet student needs and school objectives.
Individual Student Planning
- Develop personalized college, career, artistic, and personal goals for assigned students.
- Assist students and families with high school transitions, scholarship applications, and college admissions processes.
Preventive and Responsive Services
- Collaborate with the Student Support Team to provide counseling services, working with families, educators, and community resources for students with identified needs.
- Implement an effective referral and follow-up process for students requiring additional support.
- Monitor academic performance, behavior, and attendance of assigned students, facilitating appropriate interventions.
- Utilize assessment tools to determine and structure necessary individual and group counseling services.
Accountability
- Evaluate and analyze the outcomes of counseling program activities, sharing results with relevant stakeholders to inform program direction.
Additional Duties
- Organize family meetings to discuss college readiness, financial aid, and scholarship opportunities.
- Support the transition from middle school to high school through retention strategies and decision-making guidance.
- Design professional development for staff in collaboration with the Student Support Team, focusing on trauma-informed practices, SEL, and restorative approaches.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education: Master’s Degree in School Counseling
Licenses:
- Valid Professional Educator License or equivalent.
- Valid School Counselor's License or equivalent.
Skills:
- Proven ability to demonstrate academic progress of students.
- Proficient in cloud-based software solutions.
- Willingness to travel for professional development as needed.
Physical Requirements:
- Work primarily in an office environment, with the need for extended hours and participation in organizational events.
- Job involves a mix of sitting, walking, and standing.
