Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Registered Nurse III to join our team at San Antonio State Hospital. As a key member of our nursing staff, you will be responsible for providing complex bedside nursing care to patients in a 75-bed hospital setting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide patient care, interpret and explain health laws and regulations, and coordinate nursing activities and the delivery of health services.
  • Work under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
  • Provide leadership in the coordination and delivery of quality compassionate patient care.
  • Utilize the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide, delegate, supervise, and document care and teaching of patients and family.
  • Prepare, administer, and record prescribed medications, and assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans in consultation with healthcare professionals.
  • Evaluate medical information, provide direct and individualized bedside nursing care to pre and post-surgery patients and Infectious Disease patients.
  • Demonstrate clinical expertise in caring for the population served and in developing performance improvement measures and participating in competency assessments.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness, safety functions, and infection control activities for the unit.
  • Assist with patient rehabilitative care and patient or patient-related transportation needs when necessary.
Requirements
  • Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.
  • Graduation from a Nursing Program accredited by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
  • Three (3) years of work experience as an RN in a recognized health agency, hospital, or healthcare facility.
  • Employees must comply with all DSHS policies, including immunizations, skin testing, and personal protective equipment.
  • Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Military occupation(s) that relate to the initial selection criteria and registration or licensure requirements for this position may include, but not limited to: 68C, 66N/P/W, 290X, 46FX, 46NX, 46SX.
  • Knowledge of Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and Texas Center for Infectious Disease (TCID) policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of principles of adult learning.
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission, CMS, and state and federal regulations pertaining to healthcare and accreditation standards.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety, infection control, and emergency preparedness activities relating to TCID.
  • Knowledge of human development to the extent that teaching techniques may be adapted to care of young adults, adults, and geriatric individuals.
