Fleet Maintenance Technician

The Fleet Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, maintaining, repairing, and modifying company vehicles, including vans, trucks, tractors, trailers, and various refrigeration and air conditioning systems. This role involves structural metal repair and painting of vehicles, as well as performing preventative maintenance and emergency repairs while adhering to safety and quality standards. The Fleet Mechanic may also mentor Fleet Helpers and is expected to communicate effectively with colleagues, ensuring timely and accurate responses to inquiries. Team collaboration within the department and organization is essential, along with the flexibility to perform any assigned duties that serve the company's best interests.
Key Responsibilities:Assess work schedules, conduct safety inspections on equipment, gather necessary supplies, and prepare for operations. Utilize preventative maintenance schedules, checklists, manuals, diagrams, specifications, and vehicle records to guide work.Conduct routine inspections of tractors, complete necessary checklists, troubleshoot issues, and perform repairs as needed. Undertake major repairs on tractors and trailers, including disassembly, removal, and replacement of defective components in gas or diesel engines, transmissions, steering systems, electrical and hydraulic systems, air conditioning units, clutches, brakes, and other mechanical or electrical systems.Service and repair refrigeration units, addressing leaks, replacing tubing, condensers, and thermal controls, and recharging units with approved refrigerants.Perform brake services, tire changes, battery recharges, tire rotations, and comprehensive diagnostics or overhauls of engines, front ends, and transmissions as required. Prepare undercarriages for repainting, including cleaning, chipping, wire brushing, and applying primer and finish coats, as well as cleaning and painting wheel rims.Repair both interior and exterior damage on trailers, fabricate sheet aluminum patches, drill and rivet in place, repair door frames, and install or replace gaskets, grab bars, reflectors, and other graphics.Utilize electric arc welding equipment for repairs on ramps, ladders, and tripods, as well as constructing new cargo bars.Make road service trips as necessary, maintain accurate logs, records, checklists, and reports, and ensure that garage tools, equipment, and work areas are kept clean and organized.Carry out additional related tasks as assigned or directed. At the end of each shift, secure all equipment, perform general housekeeping duties, and complete all required documentation.Perform other related duties as assigned.
