JOIN OUR SPACE SYSTEMS TEAM

The Space Systems division at Rocket Lab is responsible for the design and production of every satellite and its components. This includes complete satellites for missions to the Moon and Mars, as well as individual components such as solar panels, flight software, and various subsystems. Our team comprises engineers, technicians, and designers dedicated to creating and assembling satellites for diverse sectors, including commercial, governmental, and defense.

SENIOR GUIDANCE, NAVIGATION AND CONTROLS (GNC) ENGINEER

Located in our ASI office, the Senior Guidance, Navigation and Controls (GNC) Engineer is expected to possess a robust understanding of spacecraft GNC principles and their applications. Responsibilities encompass the entire engineering lifecycle, including spacecraft concept development, algorithm formulation, flight software execution, subsystem requirements specification, detailed GNC design, and integration and testing of both subsystems and vehicles. You will collaborate with the Space Systems Software team to deliver cutting-edge programs and products.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct GNC design, modeling, and analysis for a variety of spacecraft and missions, including LEO, MEO, GEO, Lunar, and Interplanetary missions.
  • Develop flight software, algorithms, and simulation products.
  • Create tools for spacecraft autonomy to manage constellations.
  • Select GNC components and design GNC subsystems.
  • Establish and execute testing processes.
  • Define fault detection and response protocols.
  • Utilize hardware-in-the-loop and Monte Carlo simulations.
  • Integrate flight and simulation software with modern analysis and testing tools.
  • Support both internal and external design reviews.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, aerospace engineering, or a related technical field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience with C++ or a similar object-oriented programming language.
  • 5+ years of experience in aerospace design and development or a related area.
  • Familiarity with GNC sensors and actuators.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB, Python, or similar programming languages.
  • Expertise in C++ or a comparable object-oriented programming language.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced degree in computer science, aerospace engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Experience with space mission analysis tools such as STK.
  • Knowledge of orbital dynamics, atmospheric flight, and spacecraft operations.
  • Experience with rendezvous, proximity operations, and docking (RPOD).
  • Familiarity with lunar or interplanetary missions.
  • Understanding of atmospheric GNC and multi-body modeling.
  • Experience with state space and frequency domain analysis.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
  • Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, operate a computer keyboard, and communicate effectively.
  • Must be able to commute to various locations as needed.
  • Occasional exposure to dust, fumes, and moderate noise levels.

The expected salary range for this position is provided in accordance with applicable regulations. Final compensation will be determined based on individual qualifications and experience.
