Job Overview

Position: Patient Care Assistant - Medical Surgical Float Pool

As a vital member of the healthcare team, the Patient Care Assistant provides essential support to nursing staff in delivering fundamental care to patients. This role adheres to the policies and procedures of The Nurse Connection, as well as the applicable healthcare standards and regulations set forth by the New York State Department of Health.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Support
  • Deliver personal care services, including bathing, skin care, toileting, grooming, and oral hygiene.
  • Assist with patient feeding and monitor intake and output.
  • Weigh patients using various scales and assist in repositioning them as necessary.
  • Utilize proper transfer techniques and demonstrate safe use of medical equipment.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in patient rooms, ensuring supplies are adequately stocked.
  • Transport patients and necessary equipment as required.
  • Support nursing staff and collaborate with other healthcare professionals.
  • Encourage ambulation for patients needing minimal assistance.
  • Perform basic dressing changes and skin assessments, reporting any concerns to the Registered Nurse.
  • Administer heat or cold compresses as directed by nursing staff.
  • Respond to patient calls promptly and take appropriate actions.
  • Collect and label specimens for testing.
  • Measure and document vital signs, reporting any abnormalities to the nursing team.
  • Report any changes in patient conditions or incidents to the Nursing Supervisor immediately.
  • Engage in interdisciplinary case discussions as appropriate.
  • Uphold confidentiality regarding all patient information and documentation.
  • Complete annual training requirements in line with agency policies and state regulations.
  • Enhance skills through participation in relevant professional development opportunities.
  • Maintain a professional appearance in accordance with agency dress code.
  • Foster a cooperative relationship with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
Qualifications
  • Current and valid New York State Certification for Nursing Assistants is required.
  • Minimum of six months of full-time experience as a CNA in a long-term care setting.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an accredited agency.
