Job Overview

Position: Patient Care Assistant - Medical Surgical Unit

As a vital member of the healthcare team, the Patient Care Assistant provides essential support to nursing staff in delivering fundamental care to patients while adhering to the standards set forth by the organization and regulatory bodies.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Support
  • Facilitates personal care tasks such as bathing, skin care, and grooming to ensure patient comfort and hygiene.
  • Assists with nutritional needs by helping patients with feeding.
  • Records and monitors patient intake and output accurately.
  • Conducts weight assessments using various scales.
  • Supports nursing staff in repositioning and transferring patients safely.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the safe operation of medical aids and equipment.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization in patient rooms.
  • Responsible for bed-making duties for both occupied and unoccupied beds.
  • Transports patients and necessary supplies as required.
  • Provides assistance to nursing personnel and other healthcare providers as needed.
  • Encourages mobility in patients who require minimal assistance.
  • Administers simple, non-sterile dressings under supervision.
  • Conducts skin assessments and promptly reports any concerns to the nursing staff.
  • Applies heat or cold treatments as directed by a registered nurse.
  • Responds to patient calls and takes appropriate actions.
  • Collects and properly labels various specimens.
  • Measures and documents vital signs, reporting any irregularities to the nursing staff.
  • Communicates any changes in patient conditions or incidents to the Nursing Supervisor immediately.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary case discussions as necessary.
  • Upholds confidentiality regarding all patient information and healthcare staff interactions.
  • Completes required annual training and in-service programs.
  • Engages in ongoing professional development to enhance skills.
  • Maintains a professional appearance in accordance with organizational standards.
  • Fosters a collaborative environment with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
Qualifications
  • Preferred: Current and valid certification for Nursing Assistants in New York State.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of an accredited Nurse's Aide training program.
  • Preferred: Six months of full-time experience as a CNA in a long-term care setting.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from an accredited agency.
