Job Overview

The Phlebotomist I plays a crucial role in the healthcare system by ensuring the precise collection of patient specimens for laboratory analysis within a professional medical setting. Position Details:

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM

Department: Phlebotomy Outreach

Starting Salary: Competitive, based on experience

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conducts phlebotomy procedures (venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick) following established protocols. Ensures patient identification through dual identifiers and accurately labels specimens and containers.
  2. Prioritizes specimen collections based on urgency (STAT, Routine, ASAP) and manages the reception of specimens into the laboratory, adhering to computer protocols for processing, preparation, centrifugation, and routing, including reference labs.
  3. Maintains accurate filing of laboratory reports, requisitions, and manages billing processes. Investigates complex billing issues and resolves discrepancies in patient orders while ensuring accurate demographic data entry.
  4. Handles complex specimen setups, enters intricate orders and results, and manages the packing and shipping of infectious materials. Communicates any unique circumstances regarding specimens or testing to relevant staff and management.
  5. Maintains and cleans laboratory equipment, including centrifuges and refrigerators, and records daily temperature logs. Responsible for inventory management and supply ordering to ensure smooth operations.
  6. Assists in training new staff and students, acts as a front desk representative, and performs patient registration and test ordering as necessary.
  7. Documents and communicates all relevant information thoroughly. Utilizes equipment in accordance with departmental guidelines, ensuring all tools are functioning correctly.
  8. Maintains a clean and organized workspace, properly disposing of waste and restocking supplies as needed.
  9. Upholds the mission, vision, and values of Intermountain Healthcare while adhering to service behavior standards.
  10. Performs additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Certification from an accredited body such as RPT, AMT PBT, ASCP, or equivalent is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Six months of laboratory experience is preferred.
  • Ability to perform essential duties satisfactorily, with reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities.
  • Regular attendance is required during scheduled business hours.
  • Knowledge of Therapeutic Phlebotomies is advantageous.

Physical Requirements:

This role involves interaction with patients and healthcare providers, necessitating effective verbal communication and comprehension of spoken information. The position requires operating computers and delicate laboratory equipment with precision, standing for extended periods, and performing physical tasks associated with phlebotomy.
