Job Title: Senior Mechanical Engineer, Kuiper

Project Kuiper is an initiative to increase global broadband access through a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). Our mission is to bring fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities around the world.

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly innovative and dynamic Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team at Amazon. As a key member of our Kuiper team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and testing hardware used in the satellite. Your expertise will be crucial in ensuring the success of our project.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and improve upon hardware designs used on the Kuiper Satellites, including aspects related to test, reliability, and material selection.
  • Identify trade studies based upon requirements to decide on the optimal path for design and implementation.
  • Create, iterate, and own detailed CAD models of the hardware/fixture designs you are responsible for.
  • Analyze (classical / FEA) and respond to all load conditions (static, dynamic, thermal, fatigue) to ensure margins are maintained.
  • Build development samples as path finders for further process and design improvements.
  • Write test plans throughout development with variable isolation DOEs and statistical analysis for long-term reliability assessments as needed.
  • Define qualification plans and identify acceptance testing methods at volume production.
  • Facilitate cost trades on multiple parallel configurations for cost/manufacturability vs design uncertainty.
  • Produce complete design packages – detailed drawings, analysis reports, BOMs, Assembly documentation, test reports.
  • Work with vendors for both design to specification and build to print to ensure high-quality delivery.
Requirements
  • Experience in developing functional specifications, design verification plans, and functional test procedures.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 10 years minimum work experience as a mechanical engineer in aerospace, space, or automotive industry.
  • Proficiency with CAD (Computer Aided Design) and PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) systems.
  • Experience generating requirements that support system-level functionality.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production.
  • Experience with the project management of technical projects.
  • Master's degree in computer science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or equivalent.
  • Experience working on moving mechanical assemblies or Solar Array Assemblies.
  • Experience performing development and qualification testing to inform design decisions.
  • Experience performing hand calculations to inform product/structural sizing of fixtures or products.
  • Experience writing code for data processing or test scripting for large data sets.
What We Offer

Amazon is committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace. We offer a competitive compensation package, including a base salary range of $128,600/year to $213,600/year, depending on location. We also offer equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation as part of a total compensation package. Additionally, we provide a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits.

This position will remain posted until filled. Applicants should apply via our internal or external career site.
